I don't hear many people calling this out. They were essentially resigned to the fact that the Afgan government and military would collapse into itself at some point soon.

That's the part they were right about. The Taliban won't control the country either, or even all of the people claiming to be Taliban. This is a return to tribalism, and that's not real good for us since that leaves much of the land essentially stateless. That's what let AQ and others set up shop there to begin with.

I see this debacle as further evidence that the election was rigged. I seem to remember that in the years leading up to the 2016 election people were clamoring for a President who wasn't a career politician. Trump gets elected and the whole thing does a 180 that he has no experience, the world will eat him up, and we need someone in there who has years in politics who understands how to lead. Well, we now have someone at the top spot who has decades of political experience, who can't find his way out of a wet paper bag with one end open.
