I've always suspected that India influences US policy in the area as a way of conserving on defense spending. It's unlikely that Pakistan would ever start something with US combat forces next door.

Maybe India decided we weren't worth what they were paying and so we leave.

Had we focused on Afghanistan rather than the distraction in Iraq, things might have come out differently. But, realistically, who among us wouldn't have predicted the exact result we've seen this week as the end of the war?
