Nice of the NY Times to bring this topic up. It turns out that the Times is employing a lot more creative tax attorneys than Trump did. He should really contact them to ask for advice.

In 2014, the NY Times earned profits of $29.9 million, but not only didn't they pay any taxes, they received a refund from the government of $3.5 million.

The New York Times Paid No Taxes in 2014

Unlike in the Trump situation this information was obtained and published legally. I'm sure this topic won't get 0.1% as much coverage as Trumps legal tax return.

Oh come on Doc!!! But..but..but..everyone deserves to have what all those filthy rich people have, it's not like they earned it. Someone just gave them a bunch of free money because reasons and it's just not fair!

Something tells me this thread didn't go as planned.

Oh most assuredly, but as I said, there is nothing (short of some kind of disability) that keeps anyone from becoming rich IF they have the drive and desire and are willing to take the personal risks to do so. Remember "pet rocks" back in the 70's? That made someone a millionaire... from selling rocks. It can be done. What I hear constantly though, is a bunch of whining about how "unfair" it is. Well? Life ain't fair. Learn to play the game, stay within the rules, take the risks and then people can complain about YOU (not you personally, but the generic "you").

So, when did YOU make your first billion? Not a billionaire? Okay, how about $10M? Not that much?

    Slacker...

Guilty as charged. I don't have the drive nor the desire to take the risks to do so. But you won't hear me whining about those that do, nor will you hear me say that they don't need what they have and that they should give it to me.

By the way, how many poor people do you know that are hiring others and providing them with employment? Oh, none? Huh. Imagine that.

Here's a list of the world's richest families. Now, given that some of those families have dozens or hundreds of descendants, how many of those people were ACTIVELY involved in the creation of their wealth?

    From Twitter:

    Donald J. Trump ✔ @realDonaldTrump
@BarackObama who wants to raise all our taxes, only pays 20.5% on $790k salary. http://1.usa.gov/HFZJKH Do as I say not as I do.

Yeah. The guy who paid no tax *****ing about the guy paying tax.

Oh, and this one, calling for others to pay more taxes - but not Donald.

    Donald J. Trump ✔ @realDonaldTrump
The hedge fund guys (gals) have to pay higher taxes ASAP. They are paying practically nothing. We must reduce taxes for the middle class!

You'd be correct. But apparently Trump wasn't one of those people paying for 18 years. So, it begs the question, if our rich are paying most of our taxes, but Trump was doing so bad that he could pay taxes for, again, 18 years, it doesn't paint him as all that competent a businessman.

I hear dead people aren't hiring either. Nice straw man ya got there.
Absolutely not a strawman. People gripe about people having too much money all the time. Yet people with money are the ones creating jobs and opportunities for others. Trump broke no laws, and he employed a lot of people. Did he make some bad business decisions? Possibly. Were people hurt by those decisions? Probably. Are people hurt when GM closes a plant? Yep. Do you blame the stockholders for that because they want GM to be as profitable as possible, even if that means closing a plant?

Who gives a ****? What business is it of yours or anyone else's? Anyone twisted enough to sit around and worry about something someone else inherited is either a socialist or a big crybaby (or both). Perhaps if those types of people would get off their ass and work for a living maybe they'd have something to leave for their children other than a crybaby attitude. Too many sniveling children in this country waiting to lick the boots of the person most willing to steal for them.

Claimed a loss of almost a billion dollars that year, and STILL one of the richest men in the world at the time.

The NY Times made the statement and you swallowed it hook, line and sinker. Trump got a tax credit for 18 years, but that is far from showing that he paid no taxes.

he could have made $48m a year for 18 years and not paid a cent in taxes due to the carried forward loss of that first year

limiting your tax liability makes you smart. I wonder if Hillary is claiming $20/pair for her panties she donates

Of course it is, but we both know, that when you say someone hasn't paid taxes for 18 years, it's not going to be looked upon favorably from a great many people. This revelation doesn't help Trump.

appearances play to the masses, for sure. Saying "I didn't pay taxes because I legally carried forward capital losses" doesn't computer with someone who checks "earned income tax credit", "child tax credit" and every other credit they can find to increase their "refund" of taxes they didn't pay.

Trump has expanded the economy of the US way more than Hillary has. Whether he wrote an income tax check to uncle sam every year or not doesn't bother me. Sheeple can be led astray by phrasing legal action as somehow bad

"Sir, do you still beat your wife?"
    "What? No!"
"so... when exactly did you STOP beating her if you don't currently beat her?"

Headline: Relief as man claims he does not currently beat his wife

It's terrible. I'm exercising my right to not vote for either. I see no difference between Clinton nor Trump. If I wouldn't get arrested, I'd camp out on Mitch Daniel's lawn, and put up signs that said "save us."

Notwithstanding your disatisfaction with BOTH candidates, although it would seem from your posts that you're much more disgruntled with Trump, I cannot understand the logic of not voting - if for no other reason than to help influence the appointment of several supreme court justices by the next President. Also, assuming your belief in the Second Amendment is congruent with most gun owners why would you not want to try to impact the election ?

Not voting, as a form of protest against both candidates, seems illogical to me. Granted neither is my "ideal" candidate either, but given the choice and what weighs in the balance I cannot abide staying home and not voting. I will acknowledge that the candidates have similarities that aren't very palatable, but I certainly feel one candidate has a larger list of transgressions to my way of thinking.

Out of curiosity, does this mean you will eschew voting for any of the more "local" candidates or do you plan to participate in the process for all except the presidency ?
