    first trimmed cases

just trimmed my first 10 cases. chucked the case base in a drill and used a lee trimmer and a 223 trim guide. 223 cuts to 1.76 so, went slow and got 1.78-1.79. VERY HAPPY!

Just curious...how did you keep the trim guide centered, when using one made for a 223? You can also just buy a pin for 35 Remington and carefully remove enough length for it to work properly.

    not easy

it doesn't center very well but it does settle in and cuts evenly if careful. I don't have an easy way of cutting down a 35 guide. It's going to be a challenge to get the collet cut down.

I think you will find that shortening the pin on a Lee trimmer/case length gauge is a piece of cake. I can't speak to the collet in the FCD, but from I understand, the only difficult part is taking it apart, and that is explained, in detail, in this thread.

Try tape to make your mark on the collet. Sneak up on it and then do the last little tiny bit with emery cloth.

Another way to make the mark is to put a utility knife blade in a book at the perfect height, then hold on tight to the book (push down) then rotate the collet against the knife blade, leaving a clean score line all the way around.

For the pin, get your calipers out and measure... and measure... and ...

    first loads are in

Just finished the first 12 rounds of shortened case 35 rem. I loaded 200 gr FTX bullets. I used LVR powder and loaded four rounds at 38 gr, four at 39.5 and four at 41 grs. Thanks to all that supplied the how to's for this project. I'll post the results after a test fire.

    Excellent! :)

If one of those weights don't work well, go back and hit some of the gaps in-between. I usually don't go up that much at a time. I will usually go up in .6 or .8 grain increments. Hopefully you'll find something great at one of those three weights, though. :ingo:

    Lee FCD Trim Job

Here are some pics of my 45-70 Lee FCDs. The first is the standard for 2.1" 45-70s. The second picture is for my 45-70 IN deer legal 1.8" cartridge. The second My uncle took 0.3" off with a lathe. He didn't remove the collet just took his time.

I hope that helps clear up some of the confusion. My dad found me a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem last week. I am going to meet him this weekend to pick it up and shoot it. I sure hope it is a JM. I hope to hunt with my 35 Rem from the deer stand for long shots and stick with my 45-70 cast bullets for the closer work this fall. I am super pumped to develop some loads!

    Thanks INGO

    Shot great

warmed up so I got to the range. Shot a couple of 200 grain RN I had left from 100 yards just to confirm scope was close. 1st load was 38 grains of LVR with the 200 grain FTX bullet. 4 shots meausred three @ 1 3/4 inches. Not bad, cranked scope 8 clicks left. Load 2 was same bullet 39.5 grains goup of three measured 1 3/8, little better. turned scope down 6 clicks and shot last load of 41 grains. Surprised at the difference but very happy with th group. 3/4 inch 3 shot group. I'll load up some more of the 41 grain and confirm accuracy then set it 3 inches high at 100 to make it 3 low at 200. Great for a lever gun or any gun in my hands.

That sounds like a very successful range report...200 yards worth of performance with half the recoil of a slug gun! :)

I just bought a 16" 35 Remington T/C Contender barrel today that I will be using this fall. As soon as I get it it will be going to MGM to have a rim counterbore for 30-40 Krag brass. I hope this will be the barrel I keep for awhile, but only time will tell. Is anyone else using the 30-40 brass as a basic case for the 35 Remington 1.8"?

I also have a contender with a 14 inch barrel but on a pistol frame. Firearms season will bring about some tough decisions, Marlin 336 or TC Contender???

You can have an aluminum extension added to that 14" barrel, making it legal to attach a stock to the frame and creating a very short, but legal, 35 Remington carbine. I did the same thing with a 44 Magnum barrel.
