The real joy of a 30-06 is found with those who also reload. The '06 can be loaded soft enough with small lead bullets for plinking , light varmint, target, and with heavier bullets and slower powder, long range and heavy hunting. It was a great design when it was adapted that is still viable today.

Good info. I have noticed the 115gr bullets have much less recoil than 150 or 170gr.

    30/06> .308

    More power, more distance.

    More is always better, right?

If you google 30-06 vs 308 you'll get tons of good info. For me, biggest differences are:
Action length - 06 is longer
Overall power and velocity - 06 will push the same weight bullet 100-150 fps faster, or a heavier bullet (say 20 gr heavier) at approx same speed.
Weight of bullets - i believe** you can push bullets up to 225 grains in 06, less in 308 (unless custom barrel work)
Reloading - more powder in 06

Negligible difference in recoil unless you're shooting heaviest bullets possible for caliber and twist rate, in which case the 06 bucks a little more

Recoil has to do with the mass of the gun though. On a light barrelled hunting gun like my Rem700bdl, you can easily tell the difference between 115gr and 150gr. On a heavier barrel/gun you might not notice the diff.

I shot a 300 winmag one time that had a bbl ans weighted custom stock, and its recoil felt like a 223, or lighter. That is why I recommend a bbl. It was about a $3,000 rifle, but the weight surely was what affected the recoil most, even according to the owner.

I can only imagine what would be left after hitting a squirrel with 30-06!

With a FMJ bullet, it's amazingly clean. I think the squirrel is so small the bullet doesn't have a chance to really tumble and do a lot of damage. And it beats picking shot out of the meat. Yes, you can eat squirrel. ;-) I like it breaded and deep fried.

But if you use a hollow point, ummm, well good luck finding the pieces.

well i hope there on the ground as shooting a rifle up in to the air sounds dangerous to me.:twocents:

I just bought me a .30-06 a couple of weeks ago and I absolutely love it. Yesterday I took it out and did some shooting over a 100yds for the first time. I had a small melon set up at 300yds and after a couple of shots there was no more melon. I also found yesterday that when I was shooting 125 grain Remingtons it felt more like a light weight .22, and when I was shooting 150 grain Winchesters it was more like a 12 gauge with bird shoot. What it really came down to when I was buying mine was ammo availability, and by far .30-06 is a lot easier to find, whereas I haven't seen any .308 for weeks.

Evidently you are not a squirrel hunter.

I've hunted squirrel in Indiana for more than 40 years. I despise picking pellets out of game, so I do not use shot.
I use a .22Lr for squirrel, and the vast majority I shoot are in the trees when I pull the trigger.

You're right, "shooting a rifle in to the air" is dangerous, but I'm not "shooting into the air."

I won't pull the trigger unless I have a substantial limb, or trunk of the tree as a backstop.

Safety first. Know your target, AND what's beyond it.

I'm actually surprised in the amount of people who voted for the 30.06.. It seems that INGO usually favors the 308 but i agree with everyone else. I would suggest the 30.06. but really the 7Mag.

I have a Remy 700 BDL in 30-06 too. Great rifle and I still have it today. It's my first bolt gun I bought back in the late 70s. I hunted elk with it and it was around 250 yards away, no problem hitting it and got ton of meat to share. But I wasn't in Indiana then.

    30-06 most def

308 costs more now, you get less bang for your buck (literally), and you can't get it anywhere.

If you are tryng to reach out to 1000 meters then 30-06 whips 308s butt every time.

Either go find a savage model 99 in 308, OR get a browning blr in 30-06, heh. If yer used to levers , why stray away :) Pick the one that fits yer budget. Theirs not really a wrong choice between these two damn fine rounds.

.308 all the way for me. The 30-06 is a fine cartridge but it is not as efficient as the .308 It does some things better but not enough to make any real difference IMO. The 30-06 uses a LOT of powder compared to the .308 for close to the same ballistics. And you have to go to long actions for the 06

    I will second this. +1

The long cartridges like 30.06, .270, 26.06 are dinosaurs.

Sloughfoot, last time I looked in the mirror, there was an old dinosaur looking back. I have come to realize that I am ok being a dinosaur, so I guess my old stuff matches. I still have fun with it.

On the other side of the coin, I am willing to enjoy some of the new stuff that has good practical performance. Even our "new" service rifles are a 35 year old platform, but it still works pretty good.

308 and the 30-06 are almost the same until you go to a bullet heavier than 165 after that the 30-06 does a better job when using 180-220 bullets.
I use the 30-06 0ver the 308 ,It seems to me that the 30-06 has less felt recoil than the 308S I have had in the past.
