Recently I've been considering swapping my Beretta 92 for a 1911 for my CCW. I really would like to stay w/ a full size since thats where my comfort and confidence lies. How do you justify the 8+1 capacity of the 1911 for the 15+1 of the Beretta or if you carry a Glock the 17+1 capacity? Is it merely the .45 ACP vs 9mm difference or is there more underlying your decision?

I made my decision based on the fit to my hand. Being less than large, I have grip issues with all of the double stacks that I tried out. Since single stack's are my only real option, it might as well be a .45 single stack. It just so happens that the 1911 frame fit's my hand the best of all options tried. The results on paper seem to justify the choices made. I figure if 8 shots of .45 won't get me out of trouble, I probably won't be able to get out of trouble.

I just love the way 1911s shoot, look, etc. It's a timeless design, it's not going anywhere. I also prefer .45acp to 9mm. For a happy medium, I would do an XDm in .40.

We old guys figure if we can't get it done with a .45 we deserve to be darwinned out anyway . Heck we get a couple extra rounds over the revolver we used to carry anyway.

I read once that it is better to have a back-up gun than extra mags. Either way I never only carry 9 rounds. I trust my life with my 1911.
I went from an XD45C to my Champion sized 1911 as my primary carry.

I carry my 1911 somedays always with two extra mags, I also when its my revolver have extra speed loaders. Unless what happens in the movies ever comes true, which I doubt most of us have more than enough ammo. Its fun to be over prepared, because in are minds you just never know. I feel very comfotable with my SP101 with five rounds most days.

I carry a full size 1911. It is slimmer than most pistols. I find it comfortable to carry all day. Extra mags are no problem to carry, too. I switched from a Glock 19. The 1911 just fits my hand better.

I always carry at least 2 spare mags. Normally for my spares I have 2 10 rounders though. And keep extra 7 rd's and 8 rd's in the car for if SHTF so I'd hopefully have enough ammo to get home. My daily carry is my springfield 1911 mil spec. It feels better in my hand than my old G30 did.

statistics show, (don't ask me where to find this again) that in an encounter where shots are fired less than 3 shots are typically fired.
Unless you are the accuracy by volume type of person :)

When's the last time you had to kill more than 9 bad guys with your Beretta?

May be the problem is more about the crew yer run'n with than the capacity of the gun.

Thanks guys that made things a little more justifyable. If I really need all those 15+1 rounds to get outta trouble, I've got bigger things to worry about. Looks like my next purchase has just been decided upon.

Oh come now, you have now decided on a 1911. The real decision is just beginning, which brand, model, grips, sights... oh my goodness so much to do now....

Don't listen to that ^. That is the DARK SIDE speaking. Just like all that "extra" stuff you can put on an AR-15.

Get yourself a BASIC 1911 and do no add-ons to it. Just put 300+ rounds into it of HP to make sure it likes the HP ammo you feed it.

I have a Springfield 1911 MIL-SPEC and have no done anything to it. It likes the Rem HP ammo just fine. It's got scratches and do not look new or nice but it's my carry weapon and it just needs to work!

Buy another 1911 for your "show & carry" mode that you then trick out with all the nice stuff (ivory grips, custom engraving, etc..)

You've only just opened the pandoras box. Once you buy your first 1911 the 2nd isn't too far behind. Its a disease that's even more addicting than EBR disease :D I think I've decided on my 3rd, and maybe even 4th. Just gotta find one for the right price when I've got the money ;)

I love my Para 1911 and my Beretta 92. Shoot great with both. I do carry the .45 more often just because of comfort.

It's not caliber v. capacity for me. I've got a Glock 19 and an XD45c, and will carry them on occasion. My favorite carries, however, are 1911's. The 1911 just feels "right" in my hand (with slim grips).

No real problem with thick double stack mags, like the XD45c, I just like the 1911 platform. I "justify" it by the fact that I just "like 'em." There's no real utilitarian purpose to my choice. It makes me happy. Get one if want one, and enjoy it. Don't overthink it, as to whether or not it's justifiable. You want one. You know it.
