I carry both ways depending on the circumstances.
As for "tactical surprise", you have to decide if it is worth the increased time it takes to deploy your pistol.
I generally prefer to be the person that nobody can remember. YMMV

I think I'm going to upgrade to a little higher end field knife. I'm considering the
Bark River Bravo 1 and the ESEE RC-5, but it doesn't look like I'm going to find anyplace where I can handle both.
Does anyone have any first hand experience with these two knives. I'd like to get some...
I don't find my P3AT particularly pleasant to shoot. I think if it was a 9mm it would be downright nasty.
I think it would make more sense if they sized it along the lines of the Kahr PM9.
I like them just the way they are except I agree that night sights are a reasonable addition.
If you can shoot one with the extended slide release before you buy one I would advise you to do so. I shoot thumbs forward and found I engaged it halfway through a magazine more often than not.
If you are willing to dress around the gun you can carry pert' neer anything. Shirts don't have to be tent size but you should have a little extra room.
Otherwise it sounds like as good an excuse as any to buy a new gun. :D
Good on her and good on her boyfriend for stepping up.
I get the feeling after reading this that nearly all of her shots hit the target but in the end she and her boyfriend were hand to hand with the attackers.
It just reinforces the fact that we aren't carrying death rays.
My carry guns, in order of most often carried are:
HK P7
S&W M&P .40 Pro 4.25 inch
S&W M&P9c
The HK is my favorite and with the right leather doesn't seem too heavy at all. The M&P Pro doesn't feel any lighter when loaded with 15 rounds of .40 but the same comment goes about good...
I took the magazines and didn't realize they came with the short baseplates. When I called Smith to see about buying some of the extended ones the CSR just shipped them out to me free of charge.
I've been in Indiana now for nearly ten years and have known about this board for about 3 years. Today was the first time I checked it out and I really liked the atmosphere.
