      When to defend

      For a quick answer, no, it is not illegal to have your gun out and at the ready. POINTING your gun at someone, however, might land you in murky legal waters. Take a few defensive pistol classes. I bet your Marine friend/family member might enjoy one too!

      I'll let some other experts handle the second and third questions, but as to how to get Mom on board, I'd suggest taking her with you to a gun safety class. Take them together (even if you know all the stuff being covered). Start with one of those 2 hour, mostly info and no gun handling...

      I'd suggest finding a LGS that will let you rent a few handgun for her to try. The grip makes a huge difference.       I'm having them shoot my 9mm, one round at a time. i've given them both some required reading, and given them the lowdown on what do wear/expect at the range. I don't think these ladies will be scared off by the 9mm. I'll let you know how it goes.
