I'll never forget it. My dad bought me a Buck hunting knife. You know the fixed blade one with the black onyx handle that you see in horror movies.

I was probably 10 years old or so. I took it out behind our house with a couple buddies and decided to make a bow and arrow set out of small trees limbs. As I went to cut a notch in one of the arrows I split the wood and sliced my left index finger right over the knuckle and all the way to the bone. I remember it like it happened yesterday. I had to go to a hand specialist because I completely cut through the tendon. I was left handed up until that point and due to that injury learned to do everything right handed. So today I'm right handed in everything except for golf and baseball. Oh, and I've been collecting knives every since that day :)

Just found this OLD thread and thought it was very cool, so let's bring it back to life.

My first knife memory was being 8 or 9 years old and my Dad gave me a Case Peanut for my birthday. Coolest gift ever. It was a gift, but I never had it in my hands without supervision at that age. Then my Grandparents came to stay with me when my parents were out of town. They did not know the pocketknife rules of the house... so I took advantage. I showed them where it was and they let me have it. To make a long story short, I closed the blade on my index finger. It hurt. And bled. And scared the crap out of me. And bled some more.

Reading the stories above made me feel better about my first knife memory, and my first knife accident.

I have had a lot of knives in my life, and have lost quite a few along the way. I'm really glad I still have that one.

First knife that was mine was a boys out knife back in the day(50's) and I still have it. Wish I can tie some wild stories to it, like using it to survive cutting wood for a fire or stabbing a rogue bear, but I cannot. Probably cut more apples than anything.

My first knife was a "MiniBuck" lockback that my parents bought me when I was 9 or 10 (whatever age Webelos are). I carried it a relatively short amount of time (enough to confirm responsibility and prove I wouldn't lose it instantly) before I was allowed to purchase a SAK Camper which lives in my tackle box to this day.

My first remembrance was watching my father skin his critters. He was a major trapper (back in the early 70's when prices were $$$$). He had this old case xx 2 blade folder.
I watched him use this knife for years until I was finally of age to skin my first muskrat. He let me use HIS knife, which was given to him by his father in the 50's. It was one
of my proudest days as a kid. By the way, I butchered that rat. He just laughed at me. The next season, he gave me MY first case folder. I had finally graduated into a trapper.
All those years paddling the canoe while he set all his V-traps. Half way through the season, in the boat, he asked to borrow mine since his was in his pocket. I proudly whipped mine
out and hit the crossbar in the canoe and it went "kirplunk" .... Aaagggghhhh !!! I swam for that knife for 30 minutes and still never found it. To this day, my father STILL carries
his. He still brings up that story everytime we talk about knives. The blade is still sharp as ever but maybe half inch wide now.

Brownie's Barbershop...Rockville Indiana. Old Brownie had a box with pocketknives that he would let us boys look at..I was fascinated by a large pocket knife that had a fork and spoon on the outside, as well as the normal blades...I never did get to own that knife that I coveted with an unholy passion! (All I ever got from Brownie was a dollar haircut, topped off with a splash of green "Lucky Tiger hair oil"..

When I was a kid there was a shop in Southlake mall that had a Victronix display. I used to slow down, stop, and stare at it when my parents took me with them to the mall. I got my first SAK when I was 8 for Christmas, I still have it somewhere. I don't know the model, but looking at the current catalog, it looks like a Spartan or Tourist minus the toothpick.

I had an old rusty boy scout folder that I was determined to carve a piece of bar soap into a dog figurine. It ended slicing my thumb pretty bad with that dull ass knife... Now all my knifes are kept extremely sharp and I also remember to cut away from my own body parts now!!

First knife I had was a Gerber double edge fighting knife that I bought while I was in the Army. I still remember the mission we were on when I lost it. I hope someday it may be returned since I had my name and SSAN etched on it. By the way Cubby are you planning any knife making classes? I'm still very interested in taking a class from you.

I remember sitting on my grandpa's back porch one evening with him when he pulled out an old stockman style knife. He used it to cut very thin slices of apple which he shared with me. I don't know why but I thought that was the coolest way to eat an apple ever.

My first knife memory, it's a good one for me.

When I was 8 years old my family went up to a giant flea market in/near Shipshewana, IN. After hours at the market they decided it was time to go get dinner, but no one could find my grandfather. They all looked for 45 minutes or so to no avail and decided to go back to the car and wait. On our way back I saw him and he beckoned me to come over to him. He told my mom to go on ahead that we'd meet up in a minute. After getting me alone he told me that he had a gift for me and handed me a pocket knife, it was a Case, two blades, one on each end. He told me to put it in my pocket and say nothing to my family about it, don't open it or fidget with it (I had a fidgeting problem as a child, he always told me he was going to get a box of switches and lock me in a closet). Over dinner my grandfather asked my mother to let me spend the night and that night he taught me knife safety and the responsibility that comes with growing up.

I wish I knew where that knife ended up, I used the crap out of it growing up and can still picture it clearly in my head after all these years.

I "borrowed" one of dad's old folders he didn't use anymore when I was just a wee one. Carried it for a while without parents knowing. Finally got it out to help cut the packaging on a gift at a party. Mom didn't like that I was carrying it (I was probably like seven or eight years old), but dad didn't care and even said I could keep the knife.

I still rediscover that knife every couple of years. Seems to float around coach cushions and junk drawers.

First knife is as much a part of growing up as a BB gun is. It's the first major responsibility a boy really has. It's a lot to have a potentially deadly item and be trusted with it.
