As I have said before, you don't get smart by having everyone agree with you. You get smart when you throw your ideas out there and let others stomp them flat.

or in this case, shoot them flat, with mass quantities of a superior bullet.

My title was my attempt at sensationalism. It gathers more attention than if I were to just call it "Why 9mm?"

This was my way of adding my opinion to jumpstart the discussion.

I had no intentions of creating a flame war. I was just curious. If you read my post, I also own a 9mm. I just don't choose it as my primary carry.

So feel free to insult me.

Fair enough. The answers are always going to be the same:

9mm: good capacity, low cost, fun to shoot
.380: too expensive and hard to find
.40: a little more expensive and snappy (not as fun to shoot for some)
    .45: more expensive, lower capacity

I have carry guns in all of those except .40 (nothing against it though).

I went looking for my version of an ideal size and weight carry pistol regardless of caliber and most of the ones I found were 9mm. So thats what I bought.
There are very few pistols as small and light as a Kahr PM9 in .40 or .45. Even the PM.45 is slightly bigger and heavier.

I would love a Kimber Ultra CDP in .45 but it would much more difficult for me to conceal and more pricey to practice with.

Let me throw this out here then. 9X18 vs 9X19. :D

Oh, I carry 9mm too, for the previous said reasons. I like the .45 acp but when I'm out and about I like to have 12 rds plus my spare mag.

Something about a cartridge that's been around over 100 years that's readily available, affordable, and works well. Granted, it has some limitations as an anti-tank round...

Not a 9 fan. Never have been and never will be. There is a reason everyone wants to buy +PQRSTUV++++++++++++++++++++++++ ammo.

If you are buying factory ammo, you need to look at the rated muzzle energy for each round. If you go to Midway, they list muzzle energy for most of the ammo they sell. For example, a Winchester silvertip in 9mm has 383 ft lbs. A Winchester silvertip in 40 has 500 ft lbs. They don't have it listed for 45. I'd say a 20% + increase in muzzle energy is pretty significant. Go through their ammo selection and compare different calibers vs different brands and see what you come up with.

Of course, a 22 that hits is better than a 50 bmg that misses.

9mm is the cartridge for experts. If you are not that good of a shot you need to carry a more powerful cartridge. :D

Does closing my eyes and pulling the trigger on my CZ until all 15 rounds are fired in the direction of the transgressor count as expert?

You'll be needing the .45 for that bro.
