Shame is a powerful motivation. When one does something this stupid to a new friend, it is very hard to take the phone call. How many times did we hide under the bed when we heard dad calling our name? I can understand the guy not wanting to talk to you. I do not condone it, though.

Make a mistake, do something stupid, go talk to the injured party. Explain it without prevarication or justification. Just speak up, fess up, shut up and pay up.

I recommend cutting him some slack to let him get over his shame. If he does not answer the phone in 24 hours, call the law and let them deal with it.

Sorry Scutter, but the case your thinking of is actually Finders vs. Losers. The judge found that Finders were the keepers, Losers were the weepers. IIRC!

You should be able to have the police come out and make a report without pressing charges at the time. See how "the perp" handles the situation and decide from there. But, there needs to be an official record of the crime (destruction of property.)
