Why do any of you care how other people spend their money? Why do you think you should be able to price other people's things?

No one anywhere is being forced to buy any of this stuff. Buyers and sellers are voluntarily engaging in commerce at mutually agreeable prices. No one is being duped or taken advantage of in any way. This isn't bottled water after a disaster. It isn't heat in the middle of winter. This is Dutch tulips.

I wouldn't feel bad if someone wants to pay me more for a stock than I paid a day ago. Or an ounce of silver. Or gold. Or anything else no matter how long I've had it or why they want it.

Wonder what I could get for my mini-30 with collapsible evil black stock :D

Your killing me... I've been eyeballing a mini30 for some time now and was about to jump on one.... Then the crazies hit and turned them into fools gold. I was suppose to meet the guy here in town that was selling one until he found out that he had surgery and was going to be laid up for a while. So that is off until he is better and or he sells it for twice as much to a layaway recipient and I pick it up later at a fair price!

Killing you? It's is tearing me apart, I cut grass for a living and money is very very tight right now. Took me years to run across the right deal an a mini-30 to convince me to go ahead and buy one. Now idiots are willing to pay an arm and a leg for stuff.

    Like I said......very tempting.
2 of the counter guy's at a local refrigeration supply house were planing to spend the Christmas bonus money on new AR's. They have been jabbering about this for a good while. I was going to go with them when they got the dream guns. They just got the bonus money today. I thought they were going to cry. Stopped in to get parts for my humidifier and they were begging me to sell them one of mine. They could not find one gun in stock anywhere.

Really - This is simply free enterprise at it's best.....Maybe we should ask the "king and his court" to help us figure out appropriate price levels... I'm sure they'd be eager to help.......let it go.

Why do any of you care how other people spend their money?

We don't. You missed the point. If these people who are willing AND ABLE (to afford) an AR REALLY needed one or "had to have one", there would already be one in their safe. This panic buying is based on emotion, not calculated thinking.

It is all silliness. No law has been proposed, much less passed. It is all hysteria and speculation

Shame on those sellers who are cashing in on the hysteria.

Even the 1994 ban was just a ban on flash suppressors, bayonet lugs, pistol grips, and detachable magazines.

    Crazy times we are in.

Why? Simple economics, demand goes up, so does the price.

Yes you do. Otherwise you wouldn't concern yourself with their motivations, or how they choose to manage their finances. Or what they need or don't need. You'd let them make their own choices.

And it seems those most concerned aren't involved in the market in any way. They aren't sellers and they've already got their ARs and mags so they aren't buyers.

To be fair, I purchased a $900 AR on Wednesday for $900. However I couldn't purchase the AR without also purchasing the $600 in accessories that were on it. It was a clever sales tactic, but to be honest I would far prefer that (I can sell the accessories and make a large chunk back) as opposed to just being straight gouged.

I gotta be honest, I think this is one of the dumber questions ever asked. I bought an AR last weekend for $1k - normally priced at $1k (saw the writing on the wall).

It's just sitting here.. I don't need it.. I don't care about it... But I wanted it. And I didn't want it until I heard from the "horse's mouth" that I might not be able to get it later on down the road.

Do any of us NEED half (if not the vast majority) of the guns we own? Nope. And it's no one else's business how/why/when/where anyone spends their money. Truth be told, this is what makes America, America.

Need? While you're reading this post, stop and take a look at your surroundings. You'll be amazed at what's around you that has absolutely nothing to do with "need."

I was thinking the same thing, wondering what's worse, an anti-gun nut telling me that I don't "need" an AR, or a gun enthusiast telling me I don't "need" an AR? Of course I don't "need" it! It's no one else's business what I want, and what I'm willing to pay for it.

Of course, the down-side is that panic buyers who are willing to pay a lot more than the normal market price drive up the cost and wipe out the inventory for everyone else.

I lucked out though. My LGS happened to have the gun I wanted at slightly less than list price. I wouldn't have bought it if it'd been more than list as that puts it beyond my want.

You guy's are missing the point....of course we do not "Need" these guns. It is a question of why jump when the prices skyrocket. It is more directed at the gougers and sheeple. Just something to stir up opinion and conversation....just like we are having right now. Not a stupid question at all.

While things may stablize some, I do not think in the long run anyone will be sorry. In 2006 I sold three gun safes full of guns. I made money on all of them, I even felt a little guilty, but that is where the market prices were. In 2011 everything I was missing was almost twice the price as I sold them for. I cannot possibly replace them. Some are just not available, like the custom shop Winchester target rifles. I think, if the world is still here in 10 years, people are going to look at $1500 AR's as the "good old days"

Prices skyrocketed because a large number of people 'jumped', not the other way around. People want an AR or 10 or a bunch of mags or whatever else and they think in the near future those things will no longer be available.

No one is gouging anyone this is just supply and demand at work. Those forces don't stop affecting the market between a distributor and a retailer.

People aren't sheeple because they won't do what you want them to do. In fact I'd say the more sheeplike are the ones who want to go get an AR but decided not to because someone on the internet told them not to panic.

Your perception of the situation and I respect that. I have seen this in other areas in the past. My statement revolves around those who do panic (and they do) when they see the prices escalate from market forces and straight up Gouging. As soon as BHO made his speech the LGS owners pulled the existing price tags (the ones that will gouge) and put up the BHO tags.
Then the rest of the jackals got involved. Next step was a panic driven surge to get whats left buying frenzy.
I have been off work now for a few weeks and spent some time at a few LGS and have seen this first hand. Not an assumption on my part.
It is exactly what it is...panic.
