Bolt guns are good, but there's something uniquely American about my favorite, lever actions!

Agreed on both counts! I absolutely love the clickity-clack you get from a nice bolt action rifle, and really like the analogy others have mentioned with a manual tranny. I recently picked up one of the new Henry Big Boy "Steel" models in .357. It has the same clickity-clack as the bolt goes back and forth, but there's something incredibly satisfying about a cowboy-style rifle. Different expressions of a similar functions I suppose, but yeah, I can't wait to shoot the Henry again, it's a total hoot! And I also really like that it has a tubular magazine, you never have to worry about losing it or buying extras (so long as I never lose the rod, that is).

If you craft your own ammunition, and especially if you mold your own bullets, bolt action rifles give you a lot more leeway in what you can do, the materials you can use and the techniques that can be employed.
Like cling peaches fellas, they're just good.
