Never owned an AK, only shot one once and I wasn't impressed. Just never had any desire to own or shoot an AK. I don't trash em or those who own em, just not my thing.
I have several of each.
I like both for different reasons.
If I want to hit what I'm aiming at beyond 200 yds, I'll use an AR.
If I want my weapon to fire after treating it like crap, I'll use an AK.
I have both as well. Both equally have their purpose and limits. I do find myself grabbing for the AR more than the AK as I head to the range or plan SHTF scenarios. Although my AK would be the prefered foul weather gun should I find myself in the muck again.
I only have an ar but I am comfortable using an ak. I am really not sure if I will go for an ak or an ar in 300 blk. I like having components that can be easily changed. With multiple ar15s then I can have backup parts and not have a larger stock of ak and ar parts
I have both but if it came down to only being able to choose one it would be my AK-47. I like both but a ak is more reliable if you drop it in water or mud.
I would choose the Kalashnikov. Have experience with both weapon systems and prefer the kalashnkov. It is simplistic and everything a battle rifle should be. If I want accurate fire give me my bolt gun
My familiarization is primary with the M-16 based platforms, but I recently decided to get a saiga 7.62x39. I'm going to baby step it and see if I like the platform/round. I no one thing I'm going to hate is the lack of BHO on the AK.
If the 5.56 is so bad why did the "Reds" make the AK-74
If the zombie's attack today I'm grabbing my AR-15
Its not the round that makes the AK the choice of so many, its the reliability in all weather and conditions that makes it so beloved. The same can't be said about the AR, its tight tolerances, and overly complex bolt.( read small easy to lose parts...not a good thing in the field) I personally like the 5.56 and the 5.45 rounds and believe the Galil to be the best AK around.
I've used the M-16/M-4 from sand and surf, to muddy humid monsson jungles and just about every clime in between. I've not had any failures from the so-called gummed up action reasons often read about in print and electronic media. That being said I never carried anything older than the M16-A2. I have also seen AKs fail from being gummed up with mud. Both are good weapons, but I'm vastly more familiar with the AR. It's almost an extention of me. I don't even have to think about putting it into action, it's instinct.
I much prefer the AK. Is it as accurate as my AR, no. However, it's plenty accurate for what I need. Not to mention it has never malfunctioned. My AR is very temperamental.
If I'm allowed a write-in vote, I'll choose an M1A. If not, I've familiar enough with both of the other platforms to be comfortable with either. I guess I'll have to vote AR since that seems to be the more common platform in my circle of trusted companions.
