I have a Fort Knox one, it's the smallest one they had at that time I bought it. Weight in 350 lbs empty. Took me and my friend a hell of a time to move it up two steps from the garage. It has a standard dial lock with a key lock built in. You can lock the dial so it cannot be turn. It holds 7 long guns and maybe 15-20 handguns on the selfs.

Would you mind saying how much it cost you & the make/model/series? Thanks.

Cabela's Weekly Flyer has the following (can't find it online on their website)
    $599.99 (was $799.99)
    Cabela's Outfitter Firelined Safe
    - Holds up to 24 long guns
    - 30-min fire rating
    - 60"H x 28"W x 21"D
    - 400 Lbs
    - Sargent & Greenlead Electronic Lock

Not crazy about the electrical lock. I have learned that the fire rating means NOTHING as all the companies use different standards so I you need to know who certified them to find out how the test was done.

An old post with some old pic's, but you get the idea. Has electronic lock, but two keys open the safe in event of power failure. Order was upgraded to 1880 degree, I believe 1550 degree was a couple hundred less. As I recall, tailgate delivery was $285ish:dunno: at 700 lbs. A bit more than your post said about spending, but get the biggest and best you can afford and you won't have to say" I never thought It would happen to me" It is full and I need another, but kids, criminals, and extended fire won't get them.

NOTE on hinges: any good safe has 4-side bolt protection. Hinges only allow the door to swing. Exterior hinges allow 180 degree radius on door opening as compared to 90 degree to 120 degree opening with interior hinges. ALSO - with exterior hinges, you can remove the door to move/transport safe in 2 piece's instead of one unit. In my case, three "BIG" guys moved the door and we used a dolly for the body into the house.

NOTE on fire: most residential structure fires burn at 1500 degrees for between 30-45 min. If you want fire protection, check the rating. 1200 degree at 30 min's isn't going to do anything but **** you off in case of a fire

FREE SHIPPING right now as stated on home page.

Safes, Gun Safes: America's Best Gun Safes, Hand Gun, Fireproof, Home and Gun Vault

Here's a shot of my Patriot safe I'm been posting about. I keep this safe on the main level of the house for central access from anywhere in the house. Fire rated 1880@90min with 14 1 3/4 locking bolts and Tool pry-rated at 60min. 60" x 30" x 27". Key/push button LCD front control. Interrior black lights are a must for low-light night entry. Over 700 lbs empty with a beautiful black gloss mirror finish. Tailgate curb delivery for just under $1800. NO problem keeping the kids out.

    dsc04455k.jpg

These are the various makes and such that I shoot the most - a nice variety to choose from. All are a blast to shoot, but I always end up with my 1964 marlin 336W 30-30 on any trip out shooting. My FN tatical police 12 guage is probably my second - this thing shoots like no other shotty

Whatever you do, think ahead. It's better now to think big than later. They are only going to get more expensive, and it'll behove you to buy for the future instead of your current needs. There is a video by American Security, AmSec, on YouTube that is VERY informative in regards to safe buying. If you can find it, I highly recommend watching it. With the advent of Golden Rods and the ability of bolting them into concrete, if you do get a huge safe, sock it into the garage in a corner and you'll be much happier in the long run.

One other point. If you buy large enough, you'll be able to put other family belongings in it safely, and have even more peace of mind when your away or in case of a fire.

Nope - doesn't work. I have tried with two safes & a reinforced storage cellar and they only end up with more guns & ammo.:D

You have a large cache of evil weapons in that box! You must be an evil person with so many guns! What would the media and your community say about you. I think it's only right to send an email about you to the flag @ white house. ha,ha,ha...

    @TMan,

I know all about "bigger safes" We have 3 document type safes for our papers. The first one was a small one and it got filled real safe (10+ years ago), then we bought a bigger one and before you knew it that too was filled! The 3rd one was a small portable one for the critical stuff. In reality one really needs a big safe room to store all the precious stuff but that is close to impossible.

:laugh:Good one! Me too! That's why I went with a 2000#, 54x30x72 monster that easily holds it all. It's golden rod protected, and firmly a part of the concrete floor. I sold one of the safes for cash money and traded the other for an AR. Good deal, and I added another gun. They were libertys so they had a good reputation and were easier to handle and stow for a small family.

My wife does fear I'll breach the capacity of this one, so I'm not as eager to show her new purchases.:D

Well the mechanical key back up on a safe means that anybody with half a brain and a bump key can be in your safe in about 10-20 seconds you have effectively consolidated your valuables in one spot for them . Safes are also another place where size realy doesnt matter that much your safe may be 2000 lbs but that doesnt mean the thief wont take a sawzall and cut the top off of it in 5-10 minutes cut 3 sides and pry it up lift the goods out through the top . Safes are not fool proof they only buy you time

I have seen some $2000.00 safes on Ebay for under $1000.00 because they were scratch and dent. A few scratches and a much better price. Not sure if that would lessen the fire rating or not. Anyways, the dealer lives near Ft. Wayne and if I can locate his website I will post it. I had a buddy who bought a few of the safes and was very happy.

The space inside of a safe is the cheapest part. I agree buy bigger than you think you need. TIME. That is the name of the game. Anything you can do to slow them down, aggravate them or frustrate them the better off you are. If they do get in, I'm going to make them work for it. Also, I didn't see anyone else mention this, but lights are really nice. I thought it would be a useless luxury item, but really I love it. They make it look pretty cool too..

Talk to Jeff Johnson of Johnson safe at the 1500. I was looking into building my second safe but the brake at work won't brake 7ga. Jeff built one for not much more than I could buy the matrial, lock and have it bent and I didn't have to weld and grind it!
