To be honest all I want is a tactical style/looking 22lr semi auto. Price wise $400 would be a complete max. Buying used would a preference, due to budget. I'm new to the gun scene so I don't know what too expect.

what are you going to do with it.

are you going to practice your Rifle carbine drills?

or are you going to shoot in general and pop tree rats?

    Thats the question.

For general target shooting maybe the 10/22 is the way to go, If your really into the black gun then 15/22

The 10/22 is a practical all around great choice, I don't know how many rounds it takes to completely wear out a 10/22 but I haven't been able to do it and I shoot way more than the average shooter. aftermarket goodies are all over the place for the 10/22 and magazines can be bought at about any gun/ sports store in the U.S. OF A. (hell yeah) (oops went redneck)

I think if its your first gun, or close too it then the 10/22,

I'm not in the camp that the 15/22 is going to be the all around gun that the 10/22 is, you will have trouble shooting prone with the 15/22,

My 2 cents, Let the 15/22 mature a bit, let the goodies get out there for it and you will always be able to get your money back on a 10/22

Thanks. i just want to range shoot for fun, maybe shoot a few squirrels in my woods. But at the same time I want something my buddies will think looks pretty damn cool. Thanks again, and sorry for being such a newbie.

Impressing your friends with the way your gun looks is cool. Blowing your friends' socks off by shooting really well is where its at!

I vote for the 10/22. Like X10 and the others have said, you can get all kinds of aftermarket parts for the 10/22 (including "tactical looking collapsible stocks with rails and the whole bit). We run 10/22s through the ringer almost every weekend and they are great rifles.

I'd get a stock 10/22 and shoot it a bit. After you've put a few hundred rounds through it, you will have a fair idea about what types of accessories you really want.

I think you're making a fine choice getting a .22lr. The best shots I know shoot lots and lots of .22. It's a cheap way to practice your marksmanship and a lot of fun too!

Believe me, I don't want to tell you how to live your life, or criticize your tastes, but I personally care much more about how a gun shoots than how it looks.... That said, I'd take a formal beauty like the 1911 over the plastic box glock any day.

    Look into the following:
    Ruger 10/22....bout $210
ATI six position side folding collapsable stock $90.
    Grip pod around $80.
    Tri-mag mag adapter bout $25....

I think the Ruger 10-22 in one of those MG 42 stocks is about the coolest thing going. I know if I showed up on the range with one of those, all my friends would wet their pants over the coolness of it.

I think you can do it for less than $400, not sure though.

    Good luck.

    I agree totally! Rep inbound.:yesway:

I think the 10/22 option is a good one. The only other one maybe a used GSG-5 rifle. Both can look cool, but the 10/22 is the better investment in my mind. :twocents:

Sounds like I should go for the 10/22. Thats was my initial choice, but once I found all the "cool" looking guns out there it got me over thinking it. What should I expect to pay for a 10/22 used?

it's not a conversion it's an ar15 built from the ground up in a 22lr calibur and the 25 round mags make it a lot of fun... spend a little time looking and save a few extra dollars, and get something you really want, it took me over 2 months of seaching and a few days of shipping but I just picked up a newly restored bulgarian ak74 with 5 30rnd mags for $359.99 today

how tactical do you want it?. I never get sick of posting pictures of my tactical Ruger 10/22. And its is capable of shooting silver dollar groups at 100 yards.

If you want to go for the red side, here's my modified Armscor AK22:

Sorry for the poor quality, it was an iphone picture, need to get out my digital camera to take better pics

They look like this from the factory though:

I got mine for $210, I saw a used one at Plainfield Shooter's Supply for a little less IIRC that had been painted in ditgital camo.

If you like the AK concept but not the Armscor there is the GSG/ATI Ak .22 but I wouldn't pay more that $350 for it.
