I was at the GM in Greenwood the other night and saw a sign (I didnt stop to read it) that started out saying NO loaded firearms..... it was tucked away in the corner and had I not been looking for it I would have never seen it. Anyone know if Greenwood GM lets you conceal in their store? I pulled my shirt over my G22 in my fobus paddle holster that does not conceal very well. You can clearly make out the gun under the shirt..

All the GM's have that sign, but all of them are supposed to end with "Except LTCH holders" (or something to that effect). The sign basically just means: Unload it if you're bringing it in for sale/service.

It would seem to me that the store is exposing itself to a lot of liability without cause.

As most NDs happen while admin handling of firearms, all that unloading and reloading in the store is an inane liability policy.

I don't understand. People with a LTCH are exempt so in theory the sign is asking people to check their unloaded weapons but those who have a LTCH never have to unholster their gun and check it.

It strikes me that what they are doing is making sure that when someone brings in a gun for some gunsmith work or for some other reason (other than concealed carry) they actually MAKE SURE it is, in fact, unloaded.

    Am I missing something?

Looks like me and you both are missing something.

I do not remember the exact verbiage of the sign but basically it covers this.

If you are bringing in a firearm for service work it needs to be cased and unloaded and checked.

If you are carrying a firearm for personal protection and have LTCH and said weapon is not in the store to be serviced then you are exempt.

That's my understanding too. Guns being "carried" are to stay where they are (i.e. holstered) and guns being brought into be serviced are to be PRE-unloaded (i.e. at home) and cased when taken to the gunsmith area. :yesway:

Guns being brought in for a possible trade are to be checked as well. If you have a LTCH and have no intention to remove your weapon from the holster then you are fine to walk on it and shop. Of course if it is a self defense issue while shopping (not likely but possible) I would not worry to much about store policy.

I think it is all because not too long ago someone brought an "unloaded" firearm in for service. I am guessing that the service person didn't read the 10 commandments for firearm handling because he pulled the trigger for some reason, and found that he just then unloaded the firearm. I don't believe anyone was hurt. Can't find a link to the article, and my brain isn't functioning to remember where it happened.

What? Unload and check your weapon.

I stopped by Gander Mountain in Evansville this evening after work to check out some electronic predator calls (hey they have a nice selection). So on the way into the store I see a new sign just inside the door that says "All guns need to be unloaded and checked in at counter NO EXCEPTIONS" I could not believe it!. I pulled my shirt down and went right in with my XD (that I had bought at the very store)carried IWB. I won't be going back and intend to call and write the manager letting them know my feelings on unarming me while in their store.

At the Terre Haute store the sign says it does not apply to
    concealed carry permit holders.:twocents:

+1 The one in Merrilville / Hobart' has the same signage. At first glance one could miss the "does not apply to".

I ran into this problem there... That's why I don't go there anymore... The assistant store manager and some gun counter clerk both tried to escort me out of the store saying you can't open or conceal carry here... After a heated discussion from them, I told them to call state or county and get over here, they said they wouldn't. It's almost kinda like my Mall situation I ran into, but they have a sign that excludes us, but then 2 associates that aren't schooled on current laws, both teamed up and said I had to leave. I am just done with those guys...

And ammo prices there are outrageous compared to Bass Pro and Cabela's.

I usually operate under one simple theory:

"If you can't see it, it doesn't exist."

Another good reason for concealed carry.

I must have missed the reason? To allow a store to continue to ignore its own posted policy?

And to paraphrase: A deterrent unseen is no deterrent at all. ;)
