We gathered up my mother in law and escorted her to MCFG. She is 77 yrs old and pretty fit for her age. She had never fired a pistol but used to hunt as a child with a .22 rifle. We spent about half an hour at the kitchen table going over grip, safety and the 4 rules.
Off to the range and spent 100 rds. of .22 Lr. through a revolver. It was difficult for her to cock the gun for single action as she does not have the strength to run it double action. She was 80% on paper at 25 ft. with the revolver.
I loaded up all the mags for the GSG (1911) and worked her into that piece. I racked the slide, safety on and went through the incidentals. After 50 rds fired she was 49 on paper at 25 ft. After another 50 she started pulling her 10 rd. groups together. We stopped there as fatigue was an issue but she is ready to go at it again.
Looks like I will be looking at a new gun for dear old MIL. Great day at the range.
I consider this a prep. If SHTF I will need everyone to be able to defend.

Edit....suddenly all the females want to go shooting. This is a good thing but dear old churchmouse will have to feed the guns. Anything it takes to get them involved.

Churchmouse....May I humbly suggest you look inti the Berreta Tomcat 32 . With the tip up barrel thereis less need to rack the slide. I admit 32 is minimum for defense ....Berreta used to make a .380 with this same feature but stopped. I'm sure you could locate one (mod 86???) with some effort ..my mother in law is going through the same thing ..but she has carried many years and does not want to give up on 9mm. Luckily for her she has many law officers as friends to help her as we live far apart. Good luck and good for your mom for getting armed and trained.

Thanks. I will consider this as there is a tomcat at my favorite LGS or there was. I am not a big fan of the .32 but I am looking for practical.

FINALLY got our garden in as well. We are trying corn again this year (it didn't fare well last year), and doubled the cucumbers (I've been on a pickling kick the last few years). Also trying some cabbage (for sauerkraut), broccoli, lettuce, and celery. Round that out with our standard onions, beans, peppers (several types), tomatoes (for sauce, canning, and fresh), and tons of herbs (fresh, frozen, and for drying). I may throw in some garlic, too.

If the corn does OK, my wife actually wants to extend the garden AGAIN for next year. If the experimental stuff does well, I'll need more space anyway.... Fire up the tiller!

    Lots of workouts and miles.

Took Sailor's Survival Comms class. Oustanding. Lots of take aways.

Put in the sq foot gardens. Need to get the main garden up to speed this weekend.

    1 dryfire session (G19, AK)

90 minutes of solid range time with the crew. 2 man team bounding drills. Good stuff.

    Picked up 135 rds .223, and 65 rds 7.62x39. :)

Ditto on the range time with the crew.

New raised beds are coming along need to finish one trellis. Radishes are ready to eat.

Restocked the extra pantry with Sams Club purchases.

Refocused my workout routine today... was focused on gaining mass, now will be looking to lean up (for the poolside) over the next 14 days by weathering a really gnarly workout regimen.

I'm not overweight by any means so if I can knock of 5-10 lbs, i'd be pretty happy.

Current weight 202lbs... i'd like to get down to at least 195lbs. Wish me luck!

(I'm gonna need it... I have a feeling this is going to be a brutal couple of weeks)

Our corn did beautiful last year....I was told by a farmer when I seen my first few stalks down I should of knew it is coons....they come in and taste and they know exactly when it is ready...they came back a few days later and wiped out our 200 stalks + over night...nothing left but a few immature ears.
Let me know how yours does...and other than electric fences any ideas for coons.

    Uh. OK. I think.

Butchered some chickens, I got. The rest will need to be translated for me.

Chicken tractors are small mobile pens that you can move around the yard. It gives the chickens a new place to scratch each day without letting them roam all over the place.

We have 2 possums causing problems this spring. We see them all the time but are never armed when we do. WE are setting up the Gazebo this weekend for the summer and I will be waiting.

Last night I helped a friend assemble the lower for his AR build. I gave the irons & red dot a quick bore sight with a laser and then it was off to the backyard. He shot pretty well for not having shot since '72. We ended the night with a shockwave exploding target and the grin on his face was completely worth it. I count it as a prep, because now there's one more well armed (although untrained) good guy out there and now he's got a rifle to clean.

I'm glad someone else agrees. I should have mentioned that I showed the guys the steel plate we were shooting afterwards and showed them the difference between the impacts of the 855 ammo vs my 69gr match hollow points. My hollow points blew up on impact and the steel core ammo actually made some nice little dents in the steel. Before I didn't think that I really had their attention on the differences between ammo and their abilities, but once they saw the beat up target they got a much better understanding first hand. I should have mentioned that when I took these two guys out back shooting last night that the first thing I did was show them how to use a TK4. They got a little bit of education last night between seeing how the lower parts of an AR work together, and the TK4 was new to them as well. All they had to do was watch, learn, and help me unload a few barrels out of the bed of a truck to be used for an upcoming class.
