I think a family will have to be very careful using light or a thing that make noise.

because you will be telling people you have something they want.:twocents:

your power will need to be covert, what do you think?:oldwise:

That really depends on what your SHTF scenario is.

Natural Disaster - weather, quake, flood?
    Civil Order Breakdown?
Total collapse of the US government?
    Drone attack?
    Natural Gas Explosion?
    Out of Beer?

    So I'd say it depends.

Lister engine plumbed to an old natural gas well.

Produces plenty of gas to run the lister indefinitely.

    Yes, it's a cool setup.

I plan on using wind power for battery bank charging. I am currently in the process of making my own.
Don't hold your breath... the energy capacity of wind in IN is very low... You may get some power from wind, but you won't get near the capacity of any wind-turbines...

I also plan to build my own, but it won't be my only solution. Summertime for sure has very few winds strong enough to generate any amount of power and the few winds that do occur are during a storm. So your typical summertime generation will be nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, then 30 minutes of extremely high winds that will wreck most turbines, then back to nothing again...

You will need a turbine that can take advantage of the storm winds without wrecking itself.

That's really interesting; I didn't think about the residue it would leave.

I've only seen plans for the crude ones. Essentially a barrel within a barrel, with a condenser. When are you planning on building yours? If I have some free time I might even try lending a few free hands to the project, if you wouldn't mind some extra help.

Where did you see those plans that sounds very interesting. I can offer a another set of hands if someone needs help.

A 4kw Champion generator, a deep cycle battery, and a 100w inverter. Plus a supply of gas to run the generator for a length of time and to get me to work. Sometimes a SHTF is not the end of the world.

This may work for short term SHTF scenarios (two weeks or so).
Its a wood burning camp stove that charges your electronics, and itself. I wish they made the larger one available to the public.

On the bright side, the price has certainly come down and they seem to have made some nice design updates since I saw them a few years ago!
