Has anybody on here used or own one of these rader detectors? I was driving a guys truck and trailer on a trip that had one of these in it and I must say it works very well (I was impressed) detected some cruisers at amazingly far distances. I have never owned a radar detector before, but used some cheap ones. If the thing wasn't 500 dollars I'd probably get one. I figure it's probably cheaper to just "not speed". Just wondered if anyone had used one?

I have a good friend with one. I have borrowed it several times. They are by far the best detector out there. IMO. Very seldom give a false reading like from an automatic door. Also tells you the direction of the reading.

I have TWO right now; had them since the first model, then the update one with Laser(sic).

Would not want any other radar detector. Sadly, I don't speed any longer. :)

It all depends how much you drive. Personally, I wouldn't be caught driving without my radar detector. I drive over 30,000 miles per year, and while I do not speed excessively, I have been known to push the envelope by 5-7 MPH.

The top brands for the last several years have been Valentine, and Escort. While the Valentine was once an industry leader, they have gotten a little laze over the last few years. My Escort incorporates technology that Valentine does not offer such as GPS lockout, and red light camera warning. I swear by my Escort and highly recommend it.

The idea of a radar detector is not fool proof though because an officer can determine speed without using electronic measuring devices. I don't know of any officers who will pull someone over for less than 5-10 mph over the limit. I don't know about you, but that's plenty fast for me. I'd rather save the $500 buying something that may or may not save you a speeding ticket and use some common sense.

I have seen people get pulled over on the Indiana Toll Road for 2 over. They use it as probable cause to investigate further. There are articles in the local paper on a regular basis about drug traffickers that got pulled over for 72 in a 70, and then got their vehicle searched. They probably would not issue a citation for a "regular person" going 72 in a 70, but who needs the hassle. I will stick with my Escort. It tells me what i need to know when I need to know it. Lets face it sometimes we just speed by accident. We are human, and we all get distracted. When the alert goes off, it gets my attention, and makes me look at the speedometer.

Oh, that's one feature I like on my GPS/SatNav (Navigon, by the way). It says WARNING if you go over the speed limit, or speed limit PLUS 5/10/15 miles per hour or whatever you want to set it at. If you accidently lose attention to your speed versus speed limit.

I can't wait for cars to prevent people from going over. Stops ALL tickets; and/or people finally get decent speed limit legislation passed once that's the case.

My grandma used to have a late 70's Town Car-type vehicle, think old tank sized car. That one used to have a built in buzzer that would sound continuously if you exceeded 55mph. That was enough to make you want to avoid the highway!

If by truck and trailer you mean semi, then you might watch out. Federal law prohibits commercial vehicles from having RADAR detectors!

I have. The guy actually went to court with a defense that because his Valentine Radar Detector didn't alert to my LIDAR unit that I was not actually clocking anyone!!! He brought in all types of test results and downloaded documents. When the judge asked him if he was driving at the clocked speed at least he was honest and said "I might have been". It was somewhat comical. He was found guilty. He was also a very nice guy too. I still run into him quite often.

Not speeding has cost me $387 in two speeding tickets. The last two speeding tickets I got I've not been speeding. In one case it was in a constuction zone and the LPD had instructions to issue a certain number of tickets, I won the lottery draw. I was in traffic and was sticking to the speed limit and everyone was passing me. The last one six months ago (these are the only two tickets I've had in the last decade. I was clocked at ten over when I know for a fact I was going the speed limit or even a mph or two under (gps verification), but the vehicle behind me was gaining on me. We both got pulled over, we both got tickets (another targeted enforcement area). In both cases I could try to fight the tickets but asking around found that virtually no one got out of tickets in those particular courts, and in the Louisville case the judge often increased the fine to the max for construction zones.

The ticket before that ten years ago was in Texas. I was speeding 10 over on a rural 4 lane highway, but again, I was the slow one and just about everyone else was going 15-20 over, so was it my out of state plates? Dunno. I don't even think of contesting if I was speeding, but considering my above experience I may start.

I haven't run a radar detector in the last five years and in that time I've gotten 2 tickets for not speeding, so maybe I need to get another one.

I have an Escort and it has saved me a few times. It has more than paid for itself. Sometimes you will get run over if you do the speed limit and become more of a road hazard than safe driver. I have a few friends with Valentines and they love them, but my Escort was a couple of hundred less and works just as well.

can any of the police officers on here say if the laser defeating devices actually work. they are supposed to send a stronger signal back to the laser gun not letting it get a reading. I was curious if they work but they are like 1k in price.

I told a guy at work that I have a radar detector, but didn't intentionally speed. He told me that the only reason to own one was to evade the law. He believed that radar detectors should be outlawed. He also told me I was a liar when I told him that I just wanted to know when I was being watched and where a LEO might be. So now I'm a criminal and a liar........ nice guy.

I like the warning to doublecheck my speed that it can give me. I used to drive 74 through Brownsburg and the nice officer always used to be camped out on the highway right where the speed limit dropped. I knew it was just a matter of time until I was going through there one day and lost track of where the limit changed. Back then the Valentine and Escort 8500 were ranked similarly. Now Escort has the 9500 that can be programed with gps coordinates for cameras and false alarms. Unless you drive where there are cameras I don't think the extra cost for the 9500 is worth it. I love my 8500 and once you get a little practice it is easy to tell the false alarms from the real alerts. Well worth the money.

When I was a teenager, I had a 1958 Chrysler Imperial which had a speed warning device associated with the cruise control. when the cruise control was shut off, It would warn you at the speed that the cruise control was set. The cool part was ... the "warning" was the accellerator pedal would push back at you if you went over the set speed. It had some serious leverage on the pedal, too. The faster you went, the harder it would push the pedal back up, untill you got below the set speed. It was really useful, but unnerving untill you got used to it, even though you knew it was designed so that you could overpower it in an emergency.
Point is that these kinds of devices aren't new, by any means.
