As if they couldn't make the town center worse, the republicans that control the town are wanting to tear down Fishers historic train station and replace it with more apartments and stores. This would mean the end of the State Fair Train and the weekly dinner trains that leave from the station to other destinations on the line. These morons also want to take on the debt that this project would incur. Of course we all know what that means. The Fishers taxpayers will get stuck with a multi million dollar bill. If you're a Fishers resident, or just someone who has taken the train from Fishers for one event or another and can find it to be against these petty tyrants wanting to destroy a part of the towns history then call or email these out of control politicians and tell them no.

I've never been aboard the Fishers Train but it does seem to add some character to a City that is really just an overblown bedroom suburban community. That said, I'm not sure Fishers has done a very good of promoting it.

I know Walt Kelly (a candidate for Fishers mayor) notes on his website the following:

As Town Council President, Walt was an innovator in bringing the Fishers Train Station with the anticipation of future mass transit

Maybe he would be less apt to get rid of it if elected.

Also, with the Indiana State Fair poised to have beer sales this year, more people might be inclined to use the Fair Train now than in years past.

I know little about Fishers. So all I have to say about it is that just being a part of history doesn't make something worth keeping. Let the property owners decide what they want to do with it. But let them pay for it too. If it's owned by the city, maybe they should consider selling it.

This historic train station you speak of, it's the one that is like 17 years old right? I agree completely that the town center looks like crap and the train station should stay but there is no historical significance to the train station as it sits today. I think the abomination that is the "trophy" in front of the town hall and the new super apartments are horrible. Fishers town planners....( I think we have them) need to get a little taste and class.

There doesn't seem to be any coherent vision for Fishers at all. I'm unincorporated so I don't get to vote on a lot of this crap, but Fishers is kind of just a street. It's a shame, because I do like living up here. It's close to work and I've got a teeny bit of property to keep the neighbors off of me.

Actually, the current station replaced the old one that was there. Yes, it's newer, but the spot is where there's always been a station. The trains currently run all summer, (for the Dinner Trains and excursions) and the State Fair. As I recall they've also run Halloween trains and trains for other holidays, too, in the past. Fishers is in real danger of losing many of the things that make it a nice community, all because of the current council and their manager. If left to their own devices they'd turn Fishers into yet another bedroom community. Fishers would be worse off without the station and the events that take place there all summer long. What they need to be building is light manufacturing, distribution and light industry. Fishers can do without any more apartments or stores.

    To All,

I know the United States has much to be proud of and methods of operations that have set a bar for efficiency.

However, this is one place where Americans could really, really learn from the Europeans.

European cities are extremely cool because they don't tear down olde historic buildings - "just 'cause we wan' sumpin' gnew!"

When I was in Assisi, Italy I wandered into a building that was being used today by the church. It was originally built over 2,000 years ago by the Romans as a Temple to Minerva! Thank God it wasn't built in 'Merica cause somebody would'a thunk it was old and we could put a neat Walmart thar that creates jobs...:(

Here in Fort Wayne I have heard city council members talk about "building a community" or "having folks take pride in their community." How in the hell can you have a sense of pride or community when you have no sense of the trials and tribulations of your alleged community? How can you be proud of something if you have no context of history in which to place it?

I am not advocating that nothing is ever torn down, but we go way overboard! When I was in Amsterdam I stayed in a Youth Hostel that was built in the 16th century. I saw homes that were used today that were as olde or older. They still had hooks sticking out over the upper floor windows so that stuff could be winched up because the stairs are too narrow.

I hope that Fishers puts up enough of a fight that someday they too may have a sense of community and not just worry about progress or jobs.

    Regards,

    Doug

Realize, the parking area for the fair train is now going to be a parking lot for the condo/shopping malfunction that now sits 8 feet off the road.
So.....I guess the train station isn't needed anymore.
****tards here really don't possess any foresight, unless its to line their pockets with Developer Cash.
The town hall meetings are like bad porn with all of the back door petting and eyes across the room as property trade deals take place.
    Its quite disgusting.

I just had a conversation with the head of development of Fishers. Yeah, he answered the phone...He said I will like the final product so I guess I will like it...All is well, I will now remain calm...When asked if the project would reflect the same lack of taste and artistic quality as the "statue" in front of the town hall he said....ummmm...no.....As he put it, "I really don't like that either". So I say bulldoze that piece of crap and put something useful there and leave the rest of it alone.

By the way , he also said that nobody's pockets were getting lined so I guess that rules that out.

The picture looks far better than in real life. The idea of the monument is outstanding. To honor Fishers residents who have served. However the second grade art class that designed it and Sign Craft the company that mangled it should be ashamed of themselves.

The trains are operated by Indiana Transportation Museum and maintain the rails between Fishers and the State Fair and some additional (a total of 38 miles altogether). They are a non profit corporation funded by donations, rider fees and museum entrance fees. I don't think they get any tax dollars and the folks that operate it are just regular folks, nice people who feel like some Indiana and US history is worth sharing.

does the train generate any real revenue or is it maintained by taxpayers?

It is sponsored by the Indiana Transportation Museum. Is there taxpayer money involved? I have no idea. This is really not about the train. It is about **** poor planning with no foresight into what is good for the town of Fishers. The train station also houses other town functions. The biggest complaint is that they are adding another 120 apartments in addition to the 242 that are already being built in Fishers Depot. They are also adding a total of 830 parking spaces. That is EXACTLY what we need on 116th street MORE FREAKING TRAFFIC. Just that many more freaking soccer moms running red lights while drinking their Starbux while talking on their cell phones. CLOSE THE TOWN BORDERS...WE'RE FULL!!!!!

Lives in city, complains about city life.
