I heard a news article on the radio that a section of road is being renamed for Tom Raper. Which made me think of what an unfortunate last name that is, which lead me to wonder:

Why is it "rapist" instead of "raper" for someone who commits rape? Its not a murderist. Arsoner sounds awkward, but who decided what was an "=er" and what was an "-ist"?
