    I remember hearing tales from door gunner that when the barrels of their M60s were just about dead they would unlock them so the next round down the pipe would launch the barrel clear. I always wondered if anyone ever got a kill like that :D

    An interesting story, but the chance of a case blowing from the headspace being unpredictable without the latch still locked down (copters aren't exactly the smoothest ride out there) and wrecking the top cover and possibly the gunner himself seems just too high.
    If it worked as stated, it would save the gunner from having to put on the big yellow oven mitt, but it wouldn't be worth the risk.
