“Captain, the missiles are going straight up! The phased array data says they are slowing as they are climbing. 30 seconds passed. Sir, they are turning and accelerating downward. Impacts predicted to be on the Chinese mainland. In 5 seconds they will be lost over the horizon. All other screens are clear and no other targets on the screen. “

The Captain asked if it was possible that the cold caused the missiles to launch, and without guideance they would just go up and fall back down.

No one had a clue, and hoped the US systems would not do the same thing.

Ying just about fell out of his chair in the bunker he and his family were living at. What idiots our leaders are to attack the United States! He just reread the launch email warning he secretly received. He built in the special email to give him some extra warning time. He was the senior programmer for the launch control system he had updated 5 years ago.

After 8 years of schooling in the United States he knew who the enemy really was, and built in some interesting fail safes into the nuclear missile targeting systems. He was not going to be part of any future war against the country he loved! America would not be attacked by the weapons targeting systems he created.

He knew if any USA coordinates were selected, the missiles would seek out the command and control systems the senior leadership would be secured at. They were in for a surprise in about 10 minutes.

His other favorite trick was programmed in the medium and short range nuclear missiles. The arming system has a flaw and the warheads would never be able to arm after launching. The ground testing and inspection controls work just fine, but the arming sequence after launch takes longer than the maximum weapon flight time. He knew that those weapons could also be used against US Military forces and wanted to be able to sleep at night.

He closed his laptop, and went over to see his family. In just a few more minutes, the senior leaders of China would be getting very warm. Today is turning out to be a great day.

Nine command and control centers and secure retreats were ionized within about a minute of each other and none of the occupants even knew they were dead. Within a few minutes, the cold was already helping cool the vaporized targets.

“What does this mean?” asked John, All the data we had reviewed, shows this thinning should not be happening for another 4 to 6 months from now.

Almost everyone was outside looking up and the glow in the sky. One by one people went in before the cold started to hurt. The thought that the sun was trying to break though is great, but the super cold temperatures still cut deeply.

The rest of the day everyone was wondering if this is a fluke, or that the ash layer is really thinning. The mood went from gloom to hope. The kids even asked if they will be able to see the moon or stars tonight.

To celebrate, we boiled some turkey spam and mixed it with rice. It wasn’t too bad and even the kids ate all the food. The talk shifted to gardening and all we could do was laugh.

8 days had passed since the sun was spotted again. Each day was a little brighter than the day before. At noon we used the camera to see what settings it would take a picture. When I compared the picture data, it was obvious the amount of light was increasing at a steady rate each day. I pulled out a photo taken last winter on a very cloudy day, and used the exposure data as a reference point. I didn’t tell anyone that it was at least 85 days away from getting to a normal winter day exposure.

My daughter put me in my place this morning when we were talking about the thermometer being frozen and it being too cold for the battery to work. She asked why we didn’t keep it indoors and take it outside to get a reading till it froze again.

The adults all looked at each other and brought it inside. Within 30 minutes the replacement batteries froze, but the last reading was -46. That was much warmer than the radio said Chicago and Indy was just a few weeks ago.
    ------
The mood at the meeting was the best anyone could remember in weeks.
The briefing included the strange events that occurred in China. No one had an answer or understood the data. All they know is that 9 missiles were launched without guidance and fell back to earth.

The data on the ash levels included earth based and satellite data. The ISS crew also shared some information on upper atmosphere ash readings. Earth based readings show that 80% of the ash should fall out of the atmosphere in 115 days and the balance should be gone in three years. The ISS and satellite data shows 104 days for 80% and 2.5 years for the balance.

The numbers for the southern hemisphere are not as good but still much better than before. 165 days for 80% to drop out and 3.25 years for the balance. They reported that almost no radio signals are come from south of the equator. They are convinced no one survived in Australia and the southern 2/3rds of South America. Africa did not fare much better. They have has some radio reports from South Africa. The ISS crew stated the two large volcanic zones have been dormant and no new evidence of eruptions or ash plumes have been observed.

The talk shifted towards the recovery of the two ISS crew members. They have a month to plan for the event and the target is Death Valley. There are enough people in the area that a rescue will be possible and the temperatures should be favorable. The target site made the Astronauts laugh, but no other site has a better survival/ rescue rate.

The President dismissed the meeting and went back to be with his wife and three kids. The three youngsters have been adopted by the crew and with 2,400 extra passengers; things on the ship are crowded. The part that makes him laugh are the motor homes and trailers that are lashed down on the top and in the hanger deck. He still can’t get over that planes are launched and recovered less than 50 feet from the new living units. At least they are empty during flight operations!
