The funniest part of this whole debacle is that the Republicans have now made homosexuality a protected class via the "fix" that Pence must do.

The Indiana Law Blog: Ind. Gov't. - "What the 'religious freedom' law really means for Indiana"

First law of government: do nothing. Maybe, just maybe, the Republicans will learn it.:D

"The true art of government is, if possible, to do nothing." Lao Tzu (604BC-531BC)

And after you've violated the first rule of government, shouldn't you employ the rule that when you find yourself in a hole, stop digging. Somebody needs to tell Pence to put his shovel down and take a break.

Not great on laws and rules, but isn't there supposed to be a separation between church and state? I figure someone with more knowledge can help answer this. Maybe that only pertains to the people making the laws?

No. That oft repeated phrase is not in the Constitution. It was in a letter written by T. Jefferson written to the Danbury Baptists that was basically telling them their sect should not be bothered by the feds. People bring this up all the time when referring to the 1st Amendment as an argument against prayer in schools, 10 Commandments on court house lawns, etc. The first amendment does not say that, it was never intended to mean that. It was meant to mean the federal government could not establish a religion (think of the Church of England) nor could it pass laws that would prevent you from exercising your religion.

From FB ... via an IGA elected person:
Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act - RFRA

    Why now?

Due to the federal government beginning to ram more and more things down our throats and with the Hobby Lobby case last year, Indiana did not have guidelines on its books for the courts in a case like Hobby Lobby's. The federal government enacted the first RFRA in 1993 as a response to a horrible 1990 US Supreme Court decision that confused centuries of recognized First Amendment religious protections. It was authored by Ted Kennedy and Chuch Schumer and signed by President Clinton. In 1997, the US Supreme court ruled that the federal RFRA did not apply to the states, which is why states started to enact their own RFRA's, with Illinois' RFRA being supported by Obama. Today, there are 30 states with RFRA's and again, given the political climate we are experiencing, it only makes sense to provide our courts the legal structure that has worked so well for the federal government for 22 years and 30 other states.

Interesting. Valid concerns that only reinforce my skepticism. We are governed by boobs.

It's like the Republican obsession with rape or the occult.

If they would just say and do nothing, things would be much better. If there was a "problem", e.g. a photographer case such as in New Mexico, the Republican could point to a concrete problem and say "we need a law for this" and people would be on board. Instead of repealing laws and telling us how this session would be about "economics" (hey, remember that lie?), they run off into the tall grass and pass bills such as this that they do not understand and deny knowing about the Doctrine of Unintended Consequences.

You can always, always count on the Stupid Party to shoot themselves in the foot.
