"Many of us have a strong affinity for Cruz and his people, and after winning three states, he should resist any entreaties from Rubio who will try to buy him off. But as the race goes forward, I would urge them to pay close attention to the example of Jeff Sessions. As Sen. Sessions properly recognizes, unless and until the grip of the bipartisan Establishment is broken, the GOP can never, ever be the party of principled conservatism — it can only be a place where conservative ideas go to die."

"Yes, there will be times when the populists disappoint pure conservatives. But populists and pure conservatives each have the same basic goal — a great country where the average person has a chance at a better life. By contrast, the Establishment already has what it wants and will do everything it can to maintain the status quo. Ted Cruz and his supporters have to make their own decision, but in the long run they need a major shakeup in the GOP Establishment to have a chance of seeing their ideas become law. Rubio (and his donors) have no intention of making such a change. In fact, they will support policies — open borders, new trade deals, more government debt — that will make any such change much harder to achieve."

Oh, and CPAC? Isn't that just another way to spell "establishment"? He doesn't need them and why would he even try? They're just looking for ways to make him look bad. He needs to be out on the campaign trail talking to regular people who understand that he's going to make them and us great again.

Oh. This is awkward. Newt "Mr. Establishment" Gingrich says Trump should skip CPAC and should be out on the campaign trail.

Why do I feel like Gingrich may just have a position in a potential Trump admin sewn up?

But... but... how can an anti-establishment candidate be working with someone in the establishment? That would be... unethical or something.

I don't see a problem with Trump having establishment cabinet members. It may result in some serious drama eventually, I'd be pretty surprised if he didn't throw a hissy in front of the press over it.

Which "he" would have the hissy? :)

Oh, and isn't there a sameness issue, though? If he surrounds himself with the same people, then how will the results be any different?

Is Gingrich really establishment though? He got shafted pretty good by Romney last time around. I think it's kind of natural that Newt would lean toward Trump or Cruz.

Sooooo.... now there's talk about Trump's wife. If he wins the White House, she'll be the first First Lady to have been nude in print.
    Classing the place up.

The vacuousness of this post is exceeded only by its lack of relevance to ... well ... anything

I don't deny it's lack of relevance..... but hey, it's the boobs of a potential First Lady. It may simply be my own expectations, but a soft core porn first lady just begs for the jokes.

And you think Trump doesn't provide enough material for jokes for the next 100 years, easily, on a daily basis?

"...unless and until the grip of the bipartisan Establishment is broken, the GOP can never, ever be the party of principled conservatism — it can only be a place where conservative ideas go to die."

I read that today, and it struck me like a lightning bolt. This is the essence of this race, and the lesson to be learned going forward. If the Republican Party does not change its views on immigration and trade, it will eventually have to either change its views on everything else, or go on losing Presidential elections forever. It cannot win elections with the quantity of core voters it currently has. It has to find a way to get these economically disaffected people back voting for them again.

Now, I can see that the opinion of some Conservatives may be: "I don't care about illegals, heck I have one in my family...and my job is in computer science, so I have nothing to fear economically." But how do you maintain "Principled Conservatism" after America is Californicated? You cannot have Principled Conservatism while drowning under a horde of economic refugees from other countries who do not share our notions of Limited Government. You cannot have Principled Conservatism while sustaining an underclass of unemployed people on entitlement and other programs, generated by job losses in industries you will not bother to lift a finger to protect.

The party has to figure out what it is about. Obviously, we do not want to give up on Limited Government. And there are some social ideas that would be hard to change without alienating much of the base. So what can you change, to grow the party and work with a larger pie again? Trade and Immigration would seem to be the logical choice. It allows you to get Conservative-leaning people back engaged with us again, without compromising Conservative principles. There is no reason why Donald Trump has to own these issues by himself. The GOP could co-opt these ideas in a heartbeat.

But the current fear, and reason this goes nowhere, is because the GOP fears this will blow up their relations with the Donor Class. So, we'll get the usual, cowardly strategy: we'll stick with our standard neocon package of tax cuts/immigration reform/trade deals, livened up with a little pro-life stuff to excite the base. And then hope the opposing candidate's "negatives" will be enough to win us the election. This is happening while the nation moves away from us both socially and demographically, and with no effort made on our part to get voters back, or convince them we give a sxxt about them (remember Romney's exit polls?).

And we will get beat. The GOP will be, as Laura Ingraham says above, a place where conservative ideas go to die.

Frankly, a lot of the grousing about Trump would be more credible, if the people doing it seemed to be interested in trying to figure out how to internalize this message, and make future Trumps irrelevant. All Romney's recent appearances sounded like, to me, was rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
