A while back, some young lady , and her mother came up to me in the store when I was getting a few things for the VFW. She had seen my service dog, and my hat, and identified me as a military veteran. Seems she has a thing for or wonderful free country, and its military veterans. She had saved her own money from her job, designed her own coin, (knowing how service members collect coins) had them made, and decided to pass one out whenever she saw one.

Yes, she made me tear up when she gave it to me...

'We' need to find this awesome young lady! I wish to thank her, get some of her coins and follow her lead.

I never heard of it while I was in.

When I was in I was usually a POG assigned to a line unit. Time and again they would have a collection for a POG that was leaving to get him an Iron Mike. That is a statue of a soldier ready for a jump.

I was in one unit that expected us to donate to a fund every month so that when someone left they would automatically get one. I was a pariah because I would not buy myself a little statue that said i was a great guy and a credit to my unit.

Needless to say I didn't get one.

Now that is pogie bait to the max.

The coins were suppose to be given out only rarely by higher ranking people. If you were in a bar, and Challenged to show your coin and didn't have it, you bought a round. they were cherished as they wren't given out like Skittles.

Did they have them in the 80s?

I guess, even if they did, submariners are probably not going to see them.
Tend to be a "bit" isolated from normal people.
