    I need to figure out what kind of clear coat or varnish to use on the rifle stock. Not a wood guy.
    A nice aerosol semi gloss polyurethane. Check out the stuff at menards, they have some for hard use, and if you spray it on, sand with 320 grit paper between coats it will come out smooth and shiny!

    That will cover over a stained rifle stock???
    Oh yeah, it'll work great. If you used an oil based stain use regular poly, if it was water based use the water based stuff. It will darken the look of the stain a little, it gives light woods (hard maple is almost white) an amber color.
