Basic Oxygen Furnace. BOF. We put scrap metal in first, then molten iron. When the scrap is wet and you put hot iron on it, well it will go boom! And since these furnaces will hold thousands of tons of steel, the boom is impressive!

Worked at a grey iron foundry in the mid 70's after loosing my life in 1st divorce. I was an electrician which meant I did everything to anything at any time no matter what. I was the only certified welder on my shift so I got most all of those repairs. The furnaces were DC inductive and man they could be scary. We had a few issues and blow outs. Cold scrap that was not ran through the pre-heater as shift foreman was under the gun for quota. In went the cold steel.....out came most all of the hot steel. Pretty impressive. Only minor injury's. I mention the welding as I was on #1 welding the lid back to the articulating arm when #3 burped. Glad I had on all my safety gear.

They just bring scrap from outside in trucks. You can pour cold on hot! But never hot on cold! We've had many killed here because of hot steel or iron going boom! Not a pretty sight! The burns don't kill ya, it's the impurity in the slag that's kills ya!
