The answer is curly maple.

That's what the handles are made of. I just used different wood stain on each one. A little stock sheen and they almost glow.

I'm keeping my eyes open for some good steel so I can try to make my own.

I know you can find the mandrels (?) for forging the heads. That would give you a uniform eye spec'd for standard handles.

I was really really into tomahawks a few years ago. I would buy the heads and finish them out myself.

I had an idea to make some mini-hawks. Maybe about 6 or 7 inches long. I thought they would be cheap to make and a lot of fun to play with.
