That side of my wife's family goes through a church or an organization or something to find a family in need and they provide Christmas gifts for them instead of spending money on each other every year. I don't know where they get the info on the families though.

Yep. This year the family they got has a mom, 5 kids, grandma and grandpa all getting presents.
