Although written for children, I still recommend the Richard Maybury series of books on economics and investing. I believe the first one is "Whatever Happened to Penny Candy?"

As for people doing something about this nonsense...well, just watch "Life of Brian," particularly the part concerning the People's Front of Judea...everyone talks a good game.
