One of my friend's cousin and his father do simulations like this for work. Not necessarily as ridiculous as a bus hitting a floating wrecking ball, but of various vehicles hitting cows, people, buildings, etc. They use rack based multi-million dollar super computers to accurately simulate everything from the inertia of the engine to the trajectory of the cow's femur bone in train crashes. It sounds kind of funny, but they do serious work for Toyota, Ford, Dodge, Subaru, etc. Even some major railroad companies.
