The reminds me of a local contractor story. So some of the major fiber optic lines connecting the east and west coast as well as the US and Canada run under South Bend. Well one time and "El Sleazo" type landscaping company accidentally drilled into the ground and cut a fiber line (this was before fiber was really used domestically, so it was something much more important than someone loosing internet). A little while later the cops and a bunch of people in suits showed up and were yelling at them to get away from the dig site. Apparently for every second that fiber line was severed, over a million dollars was being lost.
