I recently won a Ruger American rifle in a raffle.
It's chambered for the diminutive .204 Ruger.
I like the round, and I already own a Howa 1500 Sporter action in an A.B.A. chassis but I noticed one thing.

    Both rifles are incredibly loud.
Both seem much louder than my .223's.
I don't know if it's louder than a .308 or .30-06, but the crack on the .204 Ruger is very sharp.
Yesterday I decided to try out my new Ruger Ameeican so I set a target up on my home range (50 yards) and readied everything else.
I was hoping to sight in the new scope I had just installed.

I walked back to the firing point and took aim.
When I squeezed the trigger it was immediately evident that I had just screwed up.
I had my ears on, but they were riding up high for my walk to the firing line.
I forgot to put them over my ears before that first shot.
The shot was not just load, but painful.

    I won't do that again!

So what makes that little .20 caliber pill so loud?
Is it that it's moving nearly 4000fps?

The lowest velocity factory load is 3600 fps. The highest is 4200 fps.
3 to almost 4X the speed of sound makes for a high intensity muzzle blast. .223 isn't that fast.

    Yes, yes it is.

    It does have that!.
I've also read though that the ballistics are comparable to the .22-250.
