Those engineers (pronounced en-gah-NEERS) designed them that way on purpose. The ****ing bean counters wouldn let them design in an automatic tensioning system, so it was a sort of poetic justice to make the bean counters use the same instruments they pull from thier asses, to retension the magnetic tape.
