There are three sets of people involved in that question:

1. Those who already know (because they are trusted).
2. Those who are smart/aware enough to know it's a rude, intrusive question and none of their business.
3. Those who are ignorant or rude enough to ask. The third group should not receive an answer because 1) the answer will displease them in some way, 2) it's none of their business, and 3) them knowing has no conceivable advantage and a wide variety of potential negative consequences.
