He is interested in all of them, but it looks like an 1894 can be had pretty reasonable. I’m seeing them from 1894 all the way up to now ish. Have they always been in production? Any years to avoid?

Everything before 1964 carries a premium, better quality in manufacturing. They get more expensive as they get older. Good rifles, they are pretty much problem free although older models can be in calibers hard to find like 32-40.

We were looking at one this morning in 32-20. Any calibers to stay away from?

The 1894 wasn't chambered in 32-20 so you were either looking at a 1892 or 1873. Nothing wrong with 32-20 other than being a bit small and ammo will be harder to find. The 32 WS you can buy from a few different line ammo compaines like Hornady or Federal.

When my son started asking me about them I told him that I don’t know anything about them, but I know who does. You are the expert!

In the 1894 32-40 would be one to stay away from unless you son hand loads and is familiar with case forming. Ammo is scarce and more expensive. That said it is a very accurate cartridge and works well with cast bullets.

I was searching ammo on GB to try and get a little education, and check availability. Hornaday seems to make several of the older rounds for the cowboy shooters.

My only knowledge about the 1894 was that it was in most of the episodes of Longmire and looked nice. Now I know more thanks to Leadeye. :):
