A prorated sentence, like the warranty on your car tires. At 79 the guy was well worn and thus she didn't take a whole life. Her sentence must have been based on how many miles he had left.

There are no winners in this, and a court can't cure it. Heartbreaking for the family of the man who died, shameful for the driver who looked away. She can spend a lifetime trying to make it right but she can't undo what's done.

So, everyone who is wanting to crucify this woman has not checked a text while driving, right? OkieGirl has it right, sometimes **** happens. And it could happen to any one of us.

    Right here.
I don't even pay attention to my phone when I'm driving. I'll check it when I get to where I'm going and the engine has been shut down.

    Why take the chance?

I have been guilty of looking at the phone in the past. I have had a few near misses when you combine me looking and the person next to me is texting.
No contact can be as important as getting to your destination safely.

Distracted driving is all to common place these days.

This is a sad story all around. Would opinions be different if she had been changing the radio station, looking in her mirror, or looking over at a passenger she was talking to when she hit him?

How many of you cross a road counting on traffic to see you and not hit you?

I don't trust anyone to be driving and paying attention. I always look and I make sure I am not in a position to get hit. We even have a mailbox with a read door so that we do not have to stand on the edge of the road when getting our mail.

It sounds like the judge put a lot of thought into her punishment.

It would be great if she actually was in the public service announcement her fine will help fund. Let her be in a commercial about the realities of texting and driving, and how she killed someone doing it.

Then I am OK with this if that even matters.

Yes, **** happens. It happens to all of us.

In a time when 90% of the near misses I have on the road are due to cell phone use (not me) it is easy to react in the negative.
I'm right there with you! But I also know I've done stupid. I knocked the mirror off my truck getting to close to the edge of the road, I've crossed the center line, etc..
