Not finding useful information in my searches...Will anyone explain to me why this would be an important item to store?

Quick energy. Sweetens baked goods. Sugar of some sort makes yeast work better. Sugar can be used in making alcoholic beverages. Sugar works as an antibiotic in a wound. As long as it's kept dry it stores well. Doesn't go bad easily.

And it makes my tea sweet. Sweet is also a highly coveted taste and as barter goods, sugar is probably high on everyones list.

Patience covered just about all of it. Buy it in huge bags at Sam's Club and it'll last for as long as you need it, (if you're eating what you prep). I bought about 25# of brown sugar a few years back and we're still working through it. Saved a lot of money doing it, too. Those little bags add up real quick if you bake or cook with it. Refined sugar will last even longer if kept dry.

I understand the importance in todays world, just question its actual purpose if shtf. Most items are common sense just struggling with this one.

If you're just talking a short term thing, it may not be such a big deal, but long term, as in weeks turning into months, and so on, I could see it being a VERY sought after commodity.

Don't forget Honey. It never goes bad and is a great treat right out of the jar in hard times. For me it's sugar for baking and cooking and honey as a treat.

Sugar is sometimes combined with salt when curing meet. It is particularly helpful when you only have non iodized table salt to preserve with.....and what Patience said... It makes my tea sweet!

    And curing meat

I just cured a pork belly. Used equal parts salt and sugar.

I store sugar, too, for all the reasons already mentioned. A part of my preps are devoted to maintaining morale - enter sugar. In addition to sugars, I have chocolate chips and m&ms in my stores. I have read about people in long term deprivation situations giving up when their eating became monotonous. I don't know if there is truth in that or not, but I can certainly imagine that a rare treat could be a good addition in a tough situation.

How interested are you with anything, if it is bland and unexciting?

    Much like married life? :):
