Depends on whether you are using a handgun (which requires a License To Carry Handgun) anywhere off your property, including bringing it home from being purchased.
Long guns do not require anything.

The IC provides an exception for unlicensed carry when bringing it home from the place of purchase.

    IC 35-47-2-2
    Excepted persons
Sec. 2. Section 1 of this chapter does not apply to:

    *snip*

    (11) any person while carrying a handgun unloaded and in a secure wrapper from the place of purchase to his dwelling or fixed place of business, or to a place of repair or back to his dwelling or fixed place of business, or in moving from one dwelling or business to another.
    As added by P.L.311-1983, SEC.32.

    so i dont need one for a 22 or a 12gauge

A long gun may be transported without a license.

There is also a target and hunting permit which allows you to carry your handgun back and forth to the range as well as for carrying while hunting. However it is the same amount of effort to get it as it is to get a LTCH. It is a little bit cheaper and for someone under 21 may be easier to get approval on.

No, Indiana is a "shall issue" state at 18 for both.

What if someone didn't have a LTCH but went shooting handguns with someone who had their LTCH?
Lets see, the non licensed non-LEO person:
    1) has possession of a handgun (you handed it to him)
    2) Is not in his home or fixed place of business (you're at the range)
    3) Does not have a LTCH
Kinda looks like a violation, no matter how unlikely it is to get caught.

But since similar case law would likely be applied if this were ever charged, simple possession (1) should be covered by the simultaneous shared possession of the LTCH holder via constructive proximity.
