I just purchased from a friend a Smith & Wesson 38 spcl revolver that, according to him, was once carried by a police officer.

It has a 2" barrel. On the barrel is the following:

    Smith & Wesson
    38 S&W SPC CTG

The serial num on the bottom of the stock is

    S 951065

Does anyone have any specific info on this gun, its approx age, etc.? I would post a pic but havent figured out how to accomplish that yet.

Also it has black and white 'bone' grips with the emblem. I would like to find original brown or black grips for it.

A lot of police did carry S&W .38 spl revolvers, so it is possible. Posting up a pic might help the S&W experts to I.D. the pistol model and help answer your questions.

    numbers under the yoke:

OK. Under the yoke on the gun frame I see the following:

    X 3
    218 29

Also, 21829 again on the part that holds the yoke.

Looks like a 5 screw .38 Military and Police made between 1945 and 1947, probably closer to 47 with that serial number. In 1948 they switched to a C prefix.

These later became the Model 10 in 1957

Thanks so much for the info. What frame type is this so I can look for some different grips for it. I would rather have the brown or black grips.

    The replies have been great.
