Hanging their hind ends out with no air cover except what mobile systems they brought with them. Already videos up of Russia operating full scale CAS in the area and at least one mobile SAM getting destroyed.

Will they risk their precious F16s in A2A over this salient?

This looks good to me, and at first glance, makes me smile. However, and I'm no military strategist by any means, what is Ukraine's end game here? Do they think that Putie is going to allow this embarrassment to stand?
counter attacks are often to get someone to pull their forces back, and worry a bit more about defense.
Defense draws away more troops, because you have to build up each area, not knowing where someone would concentrate an attack.

A good 'defensive' strategy, is to hit an enemy at a point.
    Concentrate and overwhelm
hit supplies and troops in the back if you can
When he starts to respond... withdraw.

    Then, repeat in another area.
You only have to overwhelm in an area.
He has to spread their forces out because they don't know where you will hit.

    Deep commerce raiding.
Making an enemy respond to you, instead of the other way around.

    Generally, a short term strategy.
However, look at the effect US subs had on the Japanese shipping.
And that effect carried over into less fuel for naval and air units.

Yeah. That was what I was thinking. Get Putin to reinforce from other deployments

That was just a "theory" scenario.

    I've often been wrong.

Back in the beginning, when the Russian supply column was stuck, I thought it was just to lure the Ukrainians into an attack.
Turns out, it was just incompetence.

If you ignore a distraction, it could turn out to be the main attack.
If you attack it, it could turn out to be a distraction.

It's important to have Generals and Admirals that can figure it out, more 'wins' than 'losses'.
And even good ones will make mistakes.
Look at Adm. Halsey in the Battle Off Samar.

Lured away and let the Japanese go after an invasion force.
The most lopsided naval battle in history. Or one of the most lopsided.
