This is a spin-off from the "whiskey guys" thread. I just picked up a bottle of Sailor Jerry's last night to try out. I figured it was probably a low-end rum to try out first, but I was pleasantly surprised at the sweetness and the vanilla flavor. So, what's a good rum to try next?
I prefer the regular old Baccardi, The clear stuff, if I'm gonna have a rum and coke. The Capt. Morgan and other stuff is just too sweet for me, and almost instantly gives me a headache.
The Kraken. It's a dark, mildly spiced rum. It has nice caramel notes, and is aged in pitched barrels like some bourbons, so it also has a nice smokey hints as well. It's smooth and complex enough for drinking straight, and makes very good mixers as well.
Sailor Jerry is my no. 1. I ask every bar if they have it. Most dont. I tell em to take the captain off the shelf cause it dont have shhhh on the sailor. Stronger, cheaper, and tastes better. Always a handle of it here.
used to go to the DR all the time for work, really couldn't find anything there other than Brugal but it's good and there's it's only a few dollars a bottle. Here in the US, if you find it, it's $20+ I do like the fact that Sailor is 92 Proof and appreciate the artwork of old tattoo's behind the label.
New one out called Brinley. They have GREAT flavors (lime, van, mango, coffee), and a spiced called shipwrecked. Its made in St Kitts, aged 4yrs. One of my favs.
Kilo Kai is another good one, been around but lesser known.
If you're looking for something that's not spiced (gold, silver, coconut, etc) try don q. Better and less expensive than bacardi. Top rum in Puerto Rico, bacardi has nothing on it.
