Have you contacted any news sources yet (newspapers, tv, talk radio)? I realize the Herald Times is not likely to touch it, and tv would likely twist it to the apartment's favor, but what about local talk radio stations in Bloomington and Indianapolis? This still blows my mind.

I've been a renter in the past and my dad was a landlord for many years. I had one landlord that I wasn't getting along with, right before I bought my house. They gave me a "notice to quit" and ordered us out of the house 2 weeks before I could close on my house. When their move out date arrived the landlord showed up for a final inspection. She noticed that we hadn't moved anything and asked what was going on. I told her if she wanted me out then she needed to evict, otherwise she could go pound sand. She claimed that her notice to quit was sufficient and that we had to leave. I gave her three options: take me to court and try evicting (good luck, rent was on time every time & we were not hurting the place), go get the sheriff and force us out (if she really believed her notice to quit was sufficient), or go pound sand and let us finish out the month and a half left on our lease so we could buy our house and move. She tucked her tail and left and we never saw her again.

I'm not sure when your son's lease is up but the good news is that there are plenty of sublets available now and Bloomington has no shortage of apartments. It's up to you guys if you want to comply with their order to leave, but I'm guessing they won't offer a lease renewal. They also would not likely win in court.
