The 700SPS is rifled 1 in 12, this means you are going to have your best accuracy with 52-55 grain bullets. These light weight bullets don't buck wind well. If it was available in a 1 in 7 I would pick the .223 and use 70 grain + bullets. But as it sits I would go with the 308 for better long range ballistics. Just my :twocents:.

Either rifle will be very accurate with the 20" barrel. You have stated that you don't want another caliber so I would stick with the .223 unless you are lacking a larger caliber rifle.

Have you ever read bostons gun bible. Get a copy and read it. Then maybe you'll understand.

well since i dont have a copy why dont you elaborate on it. if im trying to kill a coyote at 300 yds and want to save the fur i cant see a 30 cal or higher filling that need.

if you dont think anything smaller than 30 cal is fit for defence against humans. im fairly certain the 5.56 has taken more lifes that a 30 cal.

mabye im just not up to bostons gun bibles standards but i see no reason to only shoot 30cal or higher. dont get me wrong i have and shoot quite a few 30cals but i also have alot of uses for a 22-28 cal centerfire aswell

I've owned my 700 PSS in .308 for years. Picked up an SPS in .223 last spring. Love em both. Ammo was not that much of a concern b/c most of my rifles (ARs and M1As) are .223 and .308. If I had to choose ONE I'd go with the .308. You said you had an AR so you might as well have a bolt gun capable of longer range and more precision, IMHO.

    Both!

If .308 is a new caliber for you, I'd stick with .223 unless you plan on pushing out past 400 yards on a regular basis.

It's cheaper to shoot and can share ammo with your existing guns. If you reload (and if you don't, why not???) then you can shoot the brass in the semi-auto a few times, then shoot it a bunch of times (40-50 more) in the bolt action.

I have the 700 SPS in both calibers and my .223 is hands down much more fun to shoot (and I *like* heavy hitting calibers).

    :+1: Well said.

    I think you're forgetting about 2 World Wars. M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, M14

Back to topic, what is a 20" bolt gun in 223 going to be able to do that one of your AR's can't.
That said, diversify, get a 308.

I have 3 ARs in 5.56 and see absolutly no advantage or purpose to having a bolt action 223.

I have both but you can't go wrong with the remington 700 heavy barrel, Since i got mine I have put in a hart barrel that was custom to my specs, had a 11degree recessed crown and a 3/4inch recoil plate and the action cut to where the bullet actually sits inside the barrel, the i swapped out the dump box/trigger guard assembly cause it's aluminum, I put in a winchester dumpbox/trigger guard that is all steel and a few other odds and ends....
It shoots like a dream and she will push the bullet through the same hole....I love my .308!!
