    Guys,
My son is a freshman at Indiana Wesleyan. They have a skeet team and he is using my 870. He is doing well with it but he may do better with an over under.

Can anyone recommend a budget over under for him?

My brother, brother in law, and I all use an ATI Cavalry O/U. We have all had them for over 8 years and have shot a lot of rounds of sporting clays with them. None of them have given us any issues. I recommend getting the extractor model vs the ejector, Its nice not having to bend over to pick up spent shells all the time. We all got ours on Black Friday deals at Rural King for around $500.

If the kid is seriously competing he will break that gun within the first year IMHO. I put down at least 10k rounds of 12ga in the last 12 months alone and I still suck. This is the time where I get to say “Buy a B gun” (Beretta, Blaser, Browning). Take your son to the Indiana gun club and have him try on a bunch of different guns and get the one that fits him the best that’s within your budget. But for something that will actually hold up to competitive shotgun shooting you are looking at at least $1.5K IMHO

    We started all our kids on single-shot, break-action, H&R Handi-Rifles / Shotguns in .410 and 20GA.
I ended up getting a Stevens 555 'Youth' model O/U in 20GA for the wife, and it quickly because a kid favorite!
The Stevens operates smoothly, it runs great, it's easy to handle, and we couldn't be happier with something everyone can use!
And, apparently, Savage acquired Stevens https://savagearms.com/firearms/sku/22165

That's considered a budget over and under?
For a true Target shotgun, yes that's considered a budget shotgun. Many in the shotgun sports competition world view them as great entry level guns. As much as some competition shooters shoot, I can see that. On a positive side, if your son takes care of it, it will hold it's value much much better than any lesser quality shotgun when/if he so chooses to upgrade to something like a Kolar or Perazzi.

I absolutely love my Browning Citori CX. But, if he's only shooting skeet then you may want to look at the Citori CXS. I have no connection but I think I saw one in the classifieds a day or two ago

Asking about a budget gun on INGO is like asking about a budget auto at a Ferrari dealership. What you want ain’t squat, and even good or great isn’t good enough.

Read the whole thread in about two more weeks, do some intense research. Then make your decision based on what your gut, heart, and wallet tells you.

Now admitting I don’t know anything about Indi. Gun Club, I’ve read enough posts from the fellows that have recommended them, from there postings I respect there opinions enough to include that in my research.

Just my 2 cents, a plain old probably used post 2013 Ruger Red Label will perform well until the young gentleman is ready to move up on his own. You can now watch and see how wrong I am.

When my wife and I go out back to bust some clay birds, (several times a year) I still use an old Mod.11 REM in 20 ga. My wife uses an old Stevens Fox Mod. B Side by Side in 12 ga. We seem to each break a few birds.

    Best of luck to you.
