A chrome S&W 38 at 80% is going to be worth about the same as the HiPoint and may not increase that much in price, so for me that would mean what would I want to have in the house.

My thinking is that if I wanted an HD gun or a truck gun eventually, I would go for the HiPoint.

    Without a doubt, the S&W .38.

The Hi-Point isn't even worth $200 NEW, let alone used. I'd never trust my home defense to a pot metal blowback pistol with finicky magazines over a proven handgun like a S&W revolver in good working order, for the same money.

I've got 2 S&W model 10 revolvers that were both made in the 1940's, and I'd trust them to do the job way before any of the cheaply made semiauto pistols on the market. .38 is plenty powerful enough for self defense, and has put a lot of bad guys in the dirt.

    Hi-Points are about $150 - $170 brand new.

You can pretty much bet on getting your $200 out of the S&W if you decide to sell it later.

I will disagree. A chromed 38 at 80 percent is only worth about $150.

I'd rather have the S&W revolver that I would trust than the Hi-Point since I think I would have a hard time having faith in it, even though I like the .45 round better than the .38.

I would go with the .38. It wouldn't be my first choice but, reliability is the issue. You simply cannot beat a wheel gun!
