When you rep someone, part of the dialog allows you to assign a number of points. The higher your own reputation score, the more points you can potentially give to someone in a rep. The number of pips under your name/title gives you an idea of someone's current rep. Everyone starts at one.

Rep can be given to anyone for any reason- usually a post that you really like. You can only rep a limited number of people per day.

I've never ran out of rep.
But hit the limit on number of reps.

When I rep I usually just +1 but will go as high as +10.

Rep is worth nothing to me. I appreciate it when I get an atta boy. but +1 is plenty for me.

I really wish we could just have ups and down on each post. And no limit.
