Well it is almost Christmas time and I am putting together a list. One thing that I have wanted to pick up is a .22 rifle. I am open to and requesting some suggestions from INGO members on what direction to go with this rifle.

In the meantime, a little bit of background info. I have a variety of rifles that I use for hunting, target shooting, etc. (AR-15s, 10s, .308 bolt gun, etc.) but no .22 long gun. I am wanting something that is cheaper to feed and can be used for little critters; however, I am also looking for something that is fun.

I am torn between a lever action, a bolt gun (to refine my skill in a lot cheaper way than with my .308), and something else (don't know what that might be). This rifle (.22) and a lever action in either .44 mag or 454 casull make up "my next long gun to buy" list.

I'd love to hear from some people about .22s you have and enjoy.

You will get a zillion different answers, so I figure I might as well add a few of my own.

Inexpensive, last forever and very accurate with any ammo - Marlin 60

Great semi-auto that you can spend more money customizing than if you just bought a Boeing 737 - Ruger 10/22

For more money, but out of this world coolness, a GSG-5

For old world greatness, made in the USA by true craftsmen, the Henry .22 any version. Their lever .22s are second to none.

    good luck!

I've got a Marlin 60 that is a great gun, as is the 10/22. You can't go wrong with either gun for fun, cheap shooting and reliability.

Carve this in stone. Ten million owners (give or take a few) can't be wrong. Just about every .22 is either a 10/22 or a Marlin 60.... and there's a good reason for that.

    What I own!

Here is my Marlin 925R package with 3x9x32 scope, paid $214 for it last year. I added a 6"-9" bipod. I also have a 925M which is the exact same rifle, but it's a magnum

Next is my Savage MKIIFV, with heavy barrel, Burris rings, bipod, and Bushnell 3x9x40 scope. It's my favorite rifle. I have close to $500, total invested in it.

Next is my Remington 597. Paid $129 for it two years ago. I took the red dot scope off, and replaced it with a Simmons 3x9x32 scope. I will put it up against any stock 10/22.

Lastly is my Kel-Tec SU22. High cap mag, and you can fit two ten round mags in the stock. I added a B.S.A. 40mm red dot, flash hider, and collapsible forward grip. I have around $470, total invested it it. It's my favorite semi-auto .22.

Some suggestions to get you started hope that helps.

Marlin 60 or 10/22. I chose the 10/22 over the 60 because I wanted a magazine fed plinker for when the Zompocolypse happens. The ruger is 100% customizable too so I can go all tacticool with it.

The Marlin 795 is mag fed and from what I can tell about $100 cheaper than a 10/22. I bought a 795 recently and have been having plenty of fun with it. It seems accurate enough but I'm a lousy shot with a rifle so I'm probably not the best judge. Somewhere down the line I'll pick up a 10/22 though--lots of customizability and accessories (which I haven't found much of for the 795) sounds like too much fun :D

I bought my son a Remington 597 2 years ago and it has been a great gun. Literally thousands of rounds through it with no problems. I had it up in Wisconsin this summer and was hitting a gong at 300 yrds with almost every shot and I'm not a rifle shooter, my BIL couldn't believe it :D

I will be buying my daughter a 10/22 next year for her B-Day, I like the 10/22 for her cause its a little smaller than the Remington 597.

If you want to spend a bit more for something nice, you might look at the next gun show for a Browning .22 auto. They are beautiful rifles and shoot great.

Thanks for all of the replies. I definitely have some things to check out. I am going to have to do a little research on some of the models listed for sure.
